Because media didn't want him to win. They blocked him out, censored some of his best speeches and constantly called him unrealistic and unelectable.
At one GOP debate RP wasn't even invited, though candidates who came lower than him in polls were.
i think the bigger thing is he has 0 name recognition.
There's no coubt he was marginalized in media though. At a time when he had raised more money for the last quarter than any other GOP candidate and were out-polling Rudy Guiliani, Fox News decided to exclude him from a debate. Jay Leno took him on his show the next day and talked about it cause he thought it was too unfair. Here's a vid of the Jay Leno interview:
