We did go back the next day and watch the theatrical version and thought it was a smart move not to have the director's version as the final product. I think a lot more people would have been upset with the alternate ending.
Overall, it was a very good movie. Just wished we had been forwarned about the director's cut.
Reading this, I couldn't agree with you more. I'm pretty sure this very well may have been the reason it wasn't the final version for an ending. There is no way that ending tested well with audiences pre-release. So you have to at least commend the foresight for an alternate.
