 I don't want to get too much into the history, because I'm not if they'll go in this direction-- so no specifics just giving a little scope on what they've touched on on-screen. 
 
Pretty much, if it weren't for J. Edgar Hoover, there's a good chance we would never have known who MLK, Rosa Parks, Malcom X, and the other well known 60's civil rights leaders were-- but in a good way.  There was a civil rights movement in it's infancy decades before the 60's, but was drastically set back by Hoover and his view that they were race agitators.
