It's basically a greatly improved Diablo 2 with regular improvements/expansions.
If you don't know what that is, it's overhead view hack n slash. You use melee and magic and ranged and other forms of combat to kill very large amounts of monsters in a medieval fantasy setting. It's largely loot-based, meaning monsters you kill drop better weapons/armor etc.. Path of Exile has an incredible skill system, where you can get VERY creative with your builds. Or you can stay simple if you want.
I prefer melee facetanking. I've beaten maybe 85% of the content with this style. But it gets really hard. You almost have to trade with other players for better gear to create your "final" build. I just don't want to do that. Some people have beaten all the content without trading with others (and without trading between their own characters), but they're gangsters who grind like crazy and know how to make the best builds and know how every boss behaves perfectly.
