This piece was the "Wipeout" for guitar of the 90's. Most guitarrists got started on a Nirvana song back then. They were incredibly easy to learn, were all over the radio, and got you attention from the ladies. Anyone who kept with the guitar as a real talent started to cut their chops on RHCP and Satrianni... there were some 1 off licks from other bands, like Candlebox... and Zepplin and Skinnard, of course... but if you could pull of Under the Bridge like Frusciante, you were a true icon of the scene.
It was like hearing a bass player get up on stage and play "Jerry was a Racecar Driver" as a sound check. You knew the guy had put in the time and effort to learn his craft, not just enough to get nookie.
People who crack me up the most are those who are like "I play guitar I know everything about music, all popular music is shit" and then they go to open mic nights and play crappy renditions of whatever pop song is in the charts using 4 chords or awful shit like Sex Is On Fire and then fuck off 10 minutes after their act if they haven't copped off.
