    Default AMA with Matt Stout

MATT STOUT WILL RE-JOIN US AT 4PM ET ON SATURDAY, OCTOBER 5TH TO CONCLUDE HIS AMA!

We are extremely proud to have Matt Stout as our guest on September 30th at 7pm ET.

Matt Stout is an online and live pro currently riding a big wave of success on the live circuit. Having become a “who’s who” of online poker, he then took his talents to the international tours to enjoy equal success in the last few years.

Big titles have eluded him so far, but the final tables and big cashes that he keeps notching with regularity have made him a very recognizable and respected live pro.

Matt’s big-hearted nature has lead him on a pursuit to organize the Charity Poker Tour – something that we definitely hope he can share details about during the AMA that he has so kindly agreed to hold with us. Please notice that This date also coincides with Day 2 of WCOOP Main Event, which Matt plans on playing. If he happens to advance to Day 2, an alternate AMA date will be announced.
Please feel free to post your questions to Matt. This is an unique opportunity!

Be sure to check out Matt's blog and coaching services at: http://stoutpoker.com/

Visit Matt’s blog at stoutpoker.com – both for fascinating stories and to contact him for private lessons.

Do you see any game becoming more popular online than NLHE? What about live?

If you could put together a fantasy hockey team using past and/or present players, who would make the cut?

When you played hockey, what position did you play? Were you ever a goalie?

Are you really a Rangers fan? You're from Jersey. Shouldn't you be a Devils fan instead or at least in addition to being a NYR fan?

    Great opportunity. Thanks for organising.

What changes do you make to your game, if any, when you change from online to live?

Would you have pursued hockey as a career if you hadn't chosen to be a professional poker player instead? If so, would you have tried to play or would you have gone into coaching?

What aspects of training for/playing hockey have helped you as a poker player, if any?

This might sound stupid, but which is more physically grueling, the WSOP ME or playing a game of hockey?

I read somewhere that you became a poker player because there was a hiccup of sorts with your payment for a semester of college. Is that true? Did you ever get your degree? What did you study?

Who is the best poker player you've ever played against? What's the most you've ever won in a live hand? What about online? What's the most you've lost live and online? What's the most you've ever put in the middle in a hand? Have you ever lost a prop bet? What did you have to do as a result...assuming you lost?

    Hi Matt...cheers from Portugal

    - If you had to choose one...JUST ONE...what would it be...online or live tournaments?

    - Charity is more and more (thank God) a common word in poker...do you think other sports should follow this example? If you won the same salary, lets say, as Lionel Messi...what could you do or set up for charity?

    - With only 3 words...how would you describe yourself as a poker player?

    Thanks and best of luck

Matt, as you progressed through poker ranks, how were you able to adjust to the rising level of competition? Did you have to redouble your study or did you already have enough to get where you are?
  9. #9
What do you think of "leveling", is that a useful concept or is it about as good as Mayan Calendar?
  10. #10
    Matt,

In your honest opinion, how much poker is a game of luck and a game of skill? Good luck/skill in WCOOP, by the way - you tell me the right order!

    Thanks
  11. #11
Besides the importance of "checking", what other similarities are there between hockey and poker?
  12. #12
    Matt,

Have you ever read a book that you could not put down. If so, what was the title?

    - Favorite movie of all time?

    - What is the best advice you're been given (or came to the conclusion to) that really helped take your poker game to the next level?

    Thanks for doing the AMA!

Would you sit down in a high stakes NLHE cash game where 4 opponents were world class cash game pro's and one would be somewhat fishy?

What games besides NLHE do you consider your specialty?

How high were you in the OP picture?

What is the most memorable hand you played in your career so far (live or online)?

Would you feel comfortable playing a tough EPT final table or would you be intimidated if the table was mostly well - known pro's?

What are your views re Obama Care? Syria? Gun control? Legalizing gay marriage at the federal level? Legalizing recreational and/or medicinal use of marijuana at the federal level? Legalizing online poker/gambling at the federal level? Sensing a trend here...at the federal level.

How does your training/coaching work? Do you train in-person, online or both? Are your sessions one-on-one or in groups? How much does it cost? Do you coach just for certain games or any type of poker that a person wants to get better at?

How did you learn to play poker?

How did you first get into poker?

Who is your favorite player to watch today (male and female)?

When did you realize that people could actually make some money with this game?

When did you realize you could make a good living in poker?

What’s the biggest prop bet you’ve ever made and did you win it?

What games still offer good players the biggest edge in bigger live tournaments like the WSOP?

When stars talk about the "biggest" games, to what limits are they generally referring in your opinion?

Other than "play, play, play", what advice would you give someone hoping to become a great player? Any recommended reading?

Who would make your Hall of Fame table?

How do you handle it when someone does something annoying like check-raising you at every opportunity during a game?

Are there certain behaviors, like someone clicking or chewing gum with his/her mouth open, that bother you more than others when you play?

Have you ever "lost it" during a game? If so, under what circumstances?

Has anyone ever "lost it" over something you did either deliberately or inadvertently during a poker game? If so, what were the circumstances that led up to that moment? What did you do once the person calmed down?

    Hi Matt

Glad you agreed on doing this AMA with us. I you don't mind have a couple questions

    - Are you into mobile poker? If so, let us know your opinion about it?
    - Where do you imagine yourself within 10 years? Poker speaking I mean...
    - What's your favorite thing to relax? Really to step away from poker after those hard-core tournaments?

    Thanks

Other than the Main, what WSOP event would you most like to win?

What online tournaments are your favorites?

What WCOOP events did you play in this year?

Do you change the way you play when you're up against a woman? Is it hard for you to take some of the female players who use their physical attributes in print ads, etc seriously or does playing against them break your concentration since so little is sometimes left to one's imagination?

    Hi Matt!

Have you had a good WCOOP Series? What did you think of this year's compared to other years? Do you play many other tournaments while you play WCOOP (like a normal session) and if so do you think the tables are tougher in medium+ stake tournaments?

What's your biggest leak when playing live?

    Thanks!

I think that PLO and OFC may eventually become more popular than NL, but I doubt it. Recreational players need a simple (two-card!) game to get them in the door. I think the PLO/OFC will continue to gain popularity along with mixed games.

Hmmmmm off the top of my head....Gretzky, Messier, Graves, Leetch, Ulf Samuelsson, Theo Fleury, Lemieux, Orr, Howe, Hasek, Richter, Selanne, Sakic, Patrick Roy, Jeff Beukeboom...I need more D....

I have the NYR shield tattooed on my right arm. I grew up in Bayonne which is right across the river from Manhattan and my Dad grew up in Jersey City which is in the same area. He grew up there before the Devils moved to NJ (they were the Colorado Rockies) so I grew up watching Rangers games with him when I was little and saw them win the cup when I was 9. I was HOOKED.

It's more like I got into poker because the hockey career wasn't going to work out. It started out with me being a really fat kid and not starting early enough in life to realistically expect to be a pro hockey player. If I did it I would be a player and eventually a coach. I still plan on coaching one day (my kids' teams!) and now I get to use poker as my competitive outlet.

The WSOP ME is more grueling because it's a week (when ur really lucky). I have to admit that, hour-for-hour, hockey is a little more grueling. haha I was really shocked when I started playing for a living how grueling live tournaments are and actually mocked what they said on ESPN about how exhausting it can be until I started doing it though. Thinking about every aspect of every hand all day long is a mentally draining task.

Yes, that's true. I turned 21 in the first of my 2 senior years, one for each major, Business Management and Industrial/Organizational Psychology. I spent the whole break in AC and when I got back to school I found out that they were missing a signature on my student loan paperwork and were sending snail mail to my parents' house but never bothered to call my cell, so I was signed out of all of my classes. My semester off is now going on eight years.

    Best: Seidel

Live hand: I don't play much cash but won a 40k pot in a 10/25/100 otb PLO game which was also prob the most I've ever put in the middle. I almost never play cash online and my biggest score online was $105k.

I don't make prop bets that I'm going to lose. Paul Wasicka def had to wear a pink shirt during day 1 of the WSOP ME a few years back that had a rainbow on it and said "hello my name is Matt Stout's Bitch" while he acted as my assistant after he didn't get as many WSOP POY points as I did in prelims.

UGHHHHH My answer to this changes frequently. If it meant getting int'l Pokerstars back in the US, I guess live? So tough tho. I love both.

I would definitely start my own charity (probably related to food banks and/or children) if I had a boatload of money, but I think the biggest think to remember with charity is that nothing is too small. If you can only afford to give $10 to your favorite charity, do it. They could use it and will not say, "I can't believe that person only sent $10." If you can't afford to give money, plenty of charities just need your time.

3 words to describe me as a poker player: tight, loose, chameleon.

    Good luck to you, too!

The biggest key is just to never get complacent no matter how much money you win or how high you're ranked. There will always someone who's better than you and/or is trying harder to get better, and even if you're #1 there's always someone on you're heels. Never stop talking through hands with friends whose game you respect, reading forums, reading books, and getting private coaching from sickos (like me! ).

I think the best way to put it is that on any given day, the game is 80% luck and 20% skill. In the long run it's 20% luck and 80% skill. It's like having a magic coin that lands on heads somewhere between 51-55% of the time. You can lose a lot of $ for a while, but if everything evens out in the long run it should all come back.

    - What is the best advice you're been given (or came to the conclusion to) that really helped take your poker game to the next level?

    Thanks for doing the AMA!
Investing and giving back to the world with charity endeavors/tournaments while I spend the rest of my time on beaches and at poker tables.

Shawshank Redemption for drama and The Big Lebowski for comedy. I want to be the Dude. But not broke. I don't want to write a $0.67 check for milk for my White Russians.

I think the most important piece of advice I ever got wasn't about poker specifically. It was an article I read in Bluff years ago (2005-06?) where a poker pro said that one of the most important things was to never play tables games and give you edge in poker back in the pits. I've stayed away from any serious gambling aside from poker and can't even begin to tell you how important that was now that I've seen multiple people win millions and give it all back to the house.

No problem, thanks for having me!

If you can't afford to give money, plenty of charities just need your time.
That is a very kind answer from you regarding Charity. Do you have a favorite Charity organization you like to support? Do you contribute within the USA or do you use worldwide organizations that might take help - for instance- Africa ?

    - In your opinion which are the TOP 3 websites to play poker nowadays?

    - The worst bad beat you had? What went through your mind afterwards?

    - Do you live poker 24/7? When you have non-poker moments (if any) what do you prefer to do? any hobbies?
    1) Stars, Stars, and Stars.

    2) KQ<J9 vs Jaka on T93JJ for 2.6 million at 8/16k with 20 left near the money bubble of the WPT Bellagio $25k Championship that David Williams won for $1.4 million. All I could think about was doing my best to grind my 15BB into the money and back up to make the FT. I had no time to think about it or let it tilt me. After I busted ITM in 17th after losing a flip to Williams I was def left wondering if spending so much of my life chasing the dream of winning one of these big live events was worth it when you can turn the nuts for all the chips vs the other chip leader and lose. I've found a nice balance in between now where I make sure I make enough and still have my shots at the really big ones. The game is tougher than ever, you can't just expect to print all your $ at the highest stakes anymore.

    3) Bunch of time at home in Vegas with my fiancé while I play some live PLO and get back in shape by playing bball and hockey, some online sessions from Mexico, the WSOPC Harrah's in AC in early December, Christmas with her fam in FL, then a trip to CO to learn to ski/snowboard and visit friends through new year til I go to PCA.

    4) I def don't live poker 24/7 like I did when I first got into it and was COMPLETELY addicted. I play hockey and go to a lot of Rangers games. I'm actually going to their first 4 games of the season which are ALL on the road and ALL in different places. I love boating and jet skiing. I do a decent amount of shooting trap shooting (think Duck Hunt with real shotguns and no asshole dog to taunt you when you miss the target). I'm also a roller coaster fanatic.

My fav charities to support are America's Second Harvest (nat'l food bank), the American Cancer Society, and Habitat for Humanity International along with the local Vegas food bank, ThreeSquare. I get a lot of satisfaction from volunteering but also sometimes feel like I'd be serving them better by playing poker that day and donating my profits, so I'm going to start having "charity days" of play soon.

What is the most memorable hand you played in your career so far (live or online)?

Would you feel comfortable playing a tough EPT final table or would you be intimidated if the table was mostly well - known pro's?
Depends on how fishy and I'd rather be playing PLO or at least a NL/PLO mix. Probably not because I like finding really good spots when I do play cash.

PLO only but I wouldn't even consider that a "specialty" til I get my game to a slightly higher level than I'm at. I play OFC too.

    Very.

I guess the hand where I shoved A7o into Martin Finger's QQ heads up for the bracelet this summer is my most memorable hand since I can't stop thinking about it until I get a bracelet.

I don't get intimidated by anyone anymore including players who I know are better than I am. You just make their edge even bigger on you if you're intimidated. Just play your best and try to learn everything you can from them along the way. I used to get frustrated by it but now realize how useful of a learning tool it can be to have a table full of sickos.

Andre Coimbre, a Portuguese PS player, is donating up to $100,000 of his winnings this year to charity. Would you consider doing something like that, too?
