Scatter's Run

Okay so I figure it's time to buckle down and refine my play. So I am going to start one of these deals. Hopefully it doesn't end up too long-winded.

I've been playing on Stars for a few months now. I had played some poker in the past and had some general concepts, so I figured it would be a fun diversion. I knew play money was pointless just because people weren't going to play for real. I play a number of freerolls and scored about 0.90 cents. I should have played more, because .90 cents really isn't something I should have brought to a cash table, but the freerolls were just so silly, I thought I would just take that money see what I could flesh it out to, and if i busted I would just freeroll it back up. I took that money to a 0.01/0.02 limit table and pretty easily built it up to a few bucks. I grew impatient with 0.01/0.02 limit though. I just felt I had no control of pots, and I just had to play the numbers. I "should" have stuck it out, but I took my 5 bucks or so over to the 2nl table. Yeah it was stupid, but my logic was it wasn't really "my" money to lose, so I didn't have any fear of losing it. I did well, and at the same time I started reading articles online, and found FTR. I adopted a disciplined style, and started getting better. I eventually had a roll suited for the level and started a good grind. I now am playing 10nl and have a bankroll of $515.14.

I am reaching a point in my poker "career" where I am not sure where I want to take it. My original logic when I started grinding was that what fun it could be to play a game I was beginning to love and at the same time have some money to maybe buy a few toys. Win/win, imo. I do however think with some further dedication I can really make something more out of this, still for fun but really just playing the best I think I am capable of. So here I am at my poker crossroads. So I guess I begin with the questions I have in my head:

1) I read a lot of people's blogs and they all seem to be about moving up. Always moving up. I assume most don't really do this solely for the income, but I am curious as to what point people feel like they can dip into their rolls for themselves. Okay, I hate to sound juvenile but I really want a PS3. At the same time assuming 300 is the bare amount I want for 10nl, I have to wonder if I should skim the money when I hit 750, or is it really not worth "replaying" 10nl. Shrug, this one probably isn't worth asking, and I am just thinking outloud.

2) Numbers! Okay. I read tons of posts with people sharing the x/x/x numbers and I wonder where I sit. Lifetime I am 19/11/3, but after many hands of play and learning a few hands not to play my 10nl stats are 16.5/10/2.56. This is only 5k hands though. If you were reading me based on those numbers, what am I? is 19/11/3 too loose?

3) How do you guys multitable with that PT3 hud? I can't do it. I have to scale down the windows and that shit clutters the entire window. I am constantly moving crap around just to see things. I just turn it off after a while.

Areas to improve this month:

1) Paying more attention. This is a little hard right now with some other outside problems. World of Warcraft takes up a good chunk of my time, and I have made some really good friends that are leaving the game next month, so I often have poker windows overlaid to my WoW screen so I can talk to them. Hopefully next month I can really focus more and learn to take some good notes so I don't have any bad habits when I move up. I have a nasty habit of running like a NES emu if I am only playing 3 tables or so too.

2) Less win-tilting. I am not sure if this is a real thing, or just something I made up but I don't tilt very hard from bad beats. I don't really try to make back lost money so much as I play back poorly at people that gave me the beat. This will only last a hand or so before I regain my senses, and thankfully bad beats don't really phase me too much. I do tend to find myself becoming less disciplined when I am up a lot. I make more plays and just do stupid things. So do others "win-tilt" like I seem to?

3) Set a play schedule. I play pretty erratically. I just do it when I feel like it. I'd like to set a block to play each day and stick to it.

Good luck! I comfortably 16 table FR w/PT3. You can change the font size, remove all the prefixs etc and make it small, like in the pic below

The BB gets me in trouble as I flop trips and decided to check the turn thinking the guy was going to stab. He had been in most of his pots. I try to end it on the turn, but he catches his runner runner. I instacall his bet because I read bluff because of his talking and I pay for it.

Sidenote: PT3 seems like a laggy, buggy piece of shit. Running 6 tables and after getting it to display nicely like I want, the numbers are skewed, it lags at some points so much so that I had to mash the bet/fold buttons just to get my decision in under the timer. Worst of all it randomly shuts down the HUD, and I have to restart it or just outright shuts down. I really haven't been using it since I couldn't really use it with WoW running anyway, but as much as I like the stats I'm not feeling this is worth the 90 some odd dollars they want for it. Meh.

Download build 13 from the website, it's much more stable. I had the same issues you did, but now its fine.

Nice little session. I went in today thinking I was going to work on some folding discipline. Of course doing that I was dealt AJo like every other hand facing a raise. I dumped a lot of them. AQo is a sticky point for me. I kind of want to make AQs my cutoff for calling a raise, but I have a tough time letting AQo go.

Anywho an okay session, no giant hands, and no giant mistakes. Juiced a set for a good amount, and some donk called my AA 3bet shove on the flop with Ace high. Chased a few flushes, but it was some decent stack poker, so I think I was justified in a number of those spots to hunt for that stack.

Another good evening session, with 2 suckouts for big money. Oh well, at least I recognized it, and need to not bet so quickly. I basically had queens in both situations. I'm not going to dig through histories to find them but the first was just a bloated pot with most of our money in by the turn. It was clear at this point he had aces but the call was so small in relation to the pot for me to not call. I rivered a Q, and of course I am called a horrible player. Cest la vie.

The second was just stupid. I had 2 big hands going and sort of transposed them. I, again, had queens, and he had jacks. He hit his set on the flop, and I bet out, he raised big. An ace had hit on the flop and I didn't notice it actually looking at another flop and shoved, the turn hit K, and the river hit 10 to complete my straight. Thankfully the guy was from Spain, so I didn't have to hear that I am a shit player, because in that hand I was, and should have folded on the flop. Oh well, again I recognize it as a lapse in concentration and hopefully learn to take more time before betting out.

I guess I will only post stats for an overall day, because I can seem to filter out sessions from PT3. The above stats are for the day.

2nd this. The HUD works MUCH better for me with Beta 13.

You're running pretty hot the last couple days (W$SD 61%!!) And except for the 99 hand above, all the other hands you posted are pretty much standard fare against your average $10NL idiots. In otherwords, don't worry about them...

You should be able to grab the HH's for the QQ hands very easily from the "Hands" tab in PT3. Just click on the "Amount Won" column header to sort by that, and find the ones where you won the most. I'd be interested in seeing your interpretation of the actual HH, instead of the remembered one...

Multi-tasking with WoW is a surefire way to making mistakes in poker.

In reference to your operation goals:
1) People move up to make more money. If your goal is to profit $450 to buy a PS3, then that is your goal! As to whether or not it's "worth" replaying $10NL, that's up to you.
2) 19/11/3 is a little loose, but not way out there (I myself play 21/17). 16.5/10/2.5 is nice and tighter, probably more profitable this way.
3) Muzz and I have addressed this. Do you have Beta 13 yet?

Monthly goals:
1) I would highly recommend seperating WoW from Poker. It's either one or the other at one time.
2) Anything that causes you to not play your A-game can be called tilt. If you loosen up after hitting a big score, then yes, this is something you need to work on! Now, on the same note, having a big stack can allow you to take some looser risks PF against other large stacks, but that's an entirely different discussion...
3) This is a good idea. You should only play when you are prepared to play.

Again, he had Jacks, and this is in fact worse then I remember it. I called a 4 bet shove, which is just insanely stupid. Again, this one is just as stupid, but I was paying attention. I think its a problem of only thinking in small aspects of a hand and not the forest of the trees. I had 2 things running in my head. 1) Over half my money went into the pot on my flop bet, just after making the bet I felt I probably had to call a shove with the size of the pot, even though I was 90% sure he had aces. Don't ask me why, again its stupid. 2) I've seen this move with AK... all the time. I failed to notice the flush on the board too. Needless to say, I have a hard time playing QQ.

As far as WoW goes, yeah I recognize that its a distraction. Its not as bad as it looks though. Often its just an overlay to talk to a good friend that is leaving in a month, so I just really want to be around her before she leaves (my ex.) When I actually play, WoW has gotten so boring that I am on autopilot and put up 1 poker window for something to do. WoW ends for me soon, so thankfully that leak will resolve itself.

I am still on the fence about where I want to go limit-wise. I have a good month until E3 to see what new stuff is coming out, and if there is going to be any price drops, so I'm just going to play like I am moving up until then, then I will evaluate.

I've tighten up certain spots of my game from my 5nl days. Much less Axs/A9/A10, and I've taken a few hands out of my button range, because they just haven't worked for me. My aggression factor will go down a bit because I am playing with calling some raises with SCs just to see how comfortable I am with them, so we will see.

My SN is Scattershot (same image as my forum one.) I ran into you once on a table I don't think I stayed at, but I couldn't place it because I recognized the image, but not the name. I went to the forums and matched it up later. See you at the tables, maybe.

Early session was good, got paid off quite a bit, but I returned the favor more then normal. I stacked someone off with a set of 10s holding KK. I look for the flush, I look for the straight, but I can't get the set scenario in my head.

Gonna try to put in at least 4 hours a day into 2 2hour sessions and work from there. So far its been successful. I'll stat up after my late session.

A frustrating session but my session "green" streak hits 5. I'd win a big hand and lose it a few hands later. AA busted by KQ, KK vs AA, etc. I kept composure, and didn't make any serious errors in the 3 hour session. I'll try to stat up after the evening session, but I tend to pass the midnight mark so its hard to filter PT3 correctly.

Sidenote: Okay, all you tards that come to 10nl tables with $2 and shove anytime you get 2 paint then reload back to 2 when you donk it off can go die in a fire. Your just a waste of time and you make finding tables a pain in the ass. If your that eager to give your two bills up, go donate it to some charity.

Okay, so PT3 doesn't parse sessions by hour, so I'm not going to do screen caps until maybe the end of the week. Its just a pain in the ass. Too much carries over past midnight to make it worth the effort.

I've always been the type to get all my money in if I can with KK, and be willing to pay off AA. I ran into it 3 times today, so I am kind of re-evaluating it. Its only one day of occurrences, so I may just be overreacting.

Anyways another good session, ups and downs, but in the green #6.
No real hands stick out but I am leaking a bit on flushes. I can't hit one to save my life with 4 to on the flop. You would think I would have solid odds to hit. It tends to go: Limp over 1 limper (I keep hearing only limp with 2 limpers with Axs, but I haven't been to strict, and tend to limp with 1 limper), flop 4 to a flush, a bet of half to 3/4ths pot comes out and I'll call, if not I bet half to juice the pot a bit, turn blanks I check. I'll call a reasonable bet depending on the guy's aggression and stack size, river blanks, I check fold. I might be playing this wrong, I don't know.

Made a few bucks so I think I'm moving up tomorrow. Almost every player was betting really fishy and was easy to read, so hopefully it'll be good times.

Standard, but heart wrenching (pun intended) fold. He's betting into a dry side pot. Don't be results oriented... Think about what would've happened if you had called and the had come on the river...

So I ran another little brief test session in 25NL, and I have to say my intial impression is that the 25NL players in my small test case are far WORSE then 10NL players. I don't know if its the high rolling gamblers that should be playing 10NL, but the bluffing so far has just been insane. It's also been transparent as hell. I was up as far as 790 at one point but I ran into some hands like a brick wall. I paid off a set vs set (55 vs 44), and stack a guy on what I knew was a big mistake if I had just saw the signs better. Set detection is such a huge leak in my game:

First let me say I hate this hand. I chant to myself that I hope someone raises so I don't have to play AJ. I HATE IT. Anyways, the signs were there. The guy limps UTG, calls the raise, check raises the flop. CLASSIC SET! I was blinded by my top 2 pair, and I shove. Forget the $5 donk (The $2 10NL donks are 5$ donks in 25NL) who flopped the biggest set of the three, because his money wasn't even important, but man if there wasn't a big enough red flag on his set, I don't know what else is. I wasn't folding that re-raise, but I might have been able to save a few coins.

Overall I think I am going to look forward to 25NL. I'll play some sporadically over the day with no WoW, and no clue whats up with my Friday night.

Okay... I would be shooting off the fireworks tonight if hadn't run into AA with KK twice tonight. I seem to always run into it. I am very unwilling to get into a huge raising war PF now with it. A spiky night, but a decent positive gain, so I am going to quit early tonight and watch a movie. But it sucks because I would be up huge without it.

About 351 fpps short of silverstar. I swear I was over 550 2 hours ago so either you tear through points a lot faster, or my memory sucks. 2 days left, so I might forsake taking Sat off to try to knock it out. We'll see how motivated I am when I get up. I'll post stats for the week tomorrow too.

So... good times at 25NL. I am mid session and all my good play has been pissed away in 2 hours by some of the worse chasing and poor luck I have ever seen. I've been rivered so many times its unbelievable. I've had 3 sets get me stacked by river gutshot straights. Cbetting fails to work because everyone calls everything with paint. I have to figure some adjustment because its effecting my play. I am not confident with solid starting hands because they are getting cracked. I can't cbet because 4 people call my raises, and when I get it 1v1 they call it and I have no clue where I am in the hand. I am down 4 buyins. 4..getting stacked holding 3 jacks losing to the Q10o that calls me down to the K on the river. Its fucking pissing me off.

Okay. So maybe replaying 10NL isn't a bad idea. More time to refine myself is probably good. So I am taking out $400 for my game system. I am going to be stricter about my time and sessions, I think 2, 2 hours sessions max at M-F. One afternoon session and one late session. Maybe a bonus Sat session (1 max) and absolutely none on Sun. I can flesh out from there once I have a rhythm going, but for now, its a good place to focus on some discipline.

Lets set of goals for July.

1) Primary goal is focus. I've found that more then 6 tables leads to trouble for me. So no more then six tables.

2) A lot of people seem to set a goal in number of hands. So I think looking over what I have done in the past, and scaling down a bit, I'll set an arbitrary number of 1k hands per day, so excluding any Sat session, we'll go 20k.

3) Giving up hands. I have this problem, I get extremely frustrated when I know I am beat after playing a hand well, and just getting outdrawn or rivered. Like the hand above, I threw out good bets up until the river, and I knew I was beat when the ace hit. However, in frustration I tossed the rest of my money in in hopes he was a tool with QQ or a 9. I've done this on a number of occasions, just because I sit and I am patient, patient, patient, then when my chance to strike rears its head. I put my money in good, I put it in again, and you know that last shot is moot because you lost, it has a strong eroding quality. So ramp up even more patience this month.

4) New 25NL bankroll goal, $875. 35 buy-ins should give me a lot more practice time. Once I do hit said goal, I'll move $600 to Fulltilt, and work 25NL there.

Only played my first session yesterday. Started +40, and ended around -4 unfortunately. Got stacked with QQ overs to a set yet again. The guy had been paying me off as a calling station and I was just betting out on him every street. Cest la vie.

Didn't do my nighttime session after getting into yet another fight with my ex, so I just didn't have the energy and went to bed.
