    Default Operation: $20k by 12/2010 => CLOSED

I have been playing only SNGs and MTTs (I actually build a nice BR through it ) since September 2006, but I decided that I needed to improve my post flop, so I'm going to put in at least 40k hands in cash games up to August.

After withdrawing some money, I have now a BR of $2k. I know I'm rolled for 50NL, but I never played cash games a lot and I do not fell comfortable, so I'll start with 25NL.

    My intermediate goals are:
    1 - Play 4K hands in 25NL and move to 50NL when winning at 25NL;
    2 - Move to 100NL when rolled for it (i.e. 2.5k)
    3 - Re-evaluate

I'll update the status every couple of days.
I'll be posting some HH in here and I would appreciate some help.

    Thanks!

What do you think is a PT level for 25NL?
Is 15/7/2 good? or 15/10/2 is better?
  3. #3
I prefer the latter although I'm 6max, fuck knows about FR.
  4. #4

    raise more though.

    Thanks for the help!
I'll try to increase my raise numbers to 10.

Here are a couple of hands from last night!

BTW: I'll post the status of my operation once per week. I don't want that it gets on my head if I post too often (as someone said around here lately ).

Hand 1: What a suck out!! I'm putting it here as to remind me how lucky I was to collect $31!

    Just a small update.
Things are not going very well. After 3k hands, I'm down 6 buy-ins (that's approximately -11 BB/100 I believe (some of it is variance, but not all). I guess that it will be hard moving to 50NL at 4k hands at this pace. Even if I have the BR for it, I want to at least have a small winning rate at 25NL.
BTW, I'll be posting some hands today as I need to work a lot on my game ... I have the feeling that I keep winning small pots and loosing big ones ...

CharlierHarper was a trappy player. I should have raised pre-flop to avoid the difficult decision later on, but I wanted to trap him. The min raise on the turn really felt like the flush draw.
However, I suppose this is standard call?

I just had another loosing session
Was up one buy in, but then the following hands happened.
Overall, I think that I played well, a part from the below hands. At least I learned an important thing: table selection and what players you need to have left and right well it's common sense but I managed to put it in practise

For those that really wonder if cash or SNGs is better (I remember there was a discuss like this on the SNG section) I now have to give my vote to cash ... I've been actively playing cash only for 2 weeks, but as DA GOAT said it once, I felt no more joy playing SNGs. Cash has brought another dimension to poker.
Even if I am still losing in 25NL, I must say I'm really liking the experience for the moment!

As for my goals. I have done about 4.2k hands and I'm down about 4 buy-ins. As soon as I'll be even a slight winner at 25NL I'll move to 50NL.

    Quick update:
I'm still down about 5 buy-ins in 25NL. Yesterday, I had an awfull session at FullTilt (I lost about 3 buy-ins in 2h30). Boy, those games are full of aggressive guys! It seams that the c-bet there is the 2nd barrel on the turn!
Then I recover a bit at Stars.

So after about 5.5k hands I'm down about $-130. Taking in consideration that I'm now learning cash, I should take some buy-ins as the price to pay for the learning curve. So I'm not too unhappy. Let's see how things progress!

As my Operation goes, I want to recover those $130 before moving to 50NL (however, I might take a shot at 50NL before , if I fell confortable ).

    Update:
    After some 7k hands on 25NL I'm down about 4 buy-ins.

Then yesterday evening, I gave a shot at 50NL, where I posted some hands this morning. Initially, I played a big scared, but as the session went on I think I played quite OK (even losing 1 buy-in by calling with TPTK an all-in from a set, *runs and hides in shame*).
In total I played 600 hands in 50NL and I'm down 1/2 buy-in. For the moment I fell confortable there, so I'll stay until either I reach $2.5k or I go down to less then $1.8k. My current BR is $1920.

    A pretty stupid hand:

I did a very short session yesterday in 50NL. I recovered a bit in and I'm almost break even at 800 hands in 50NL. For most of you it's not a good thing, for me it is , at least for the moment that I'm learning cash.

This hand was good to recover a bit of money against a station

Was hoping the villain has trip 9s, KQ or a flush draw (without a Q), but the result was even better

And then this hand I think I lost some value on the river, as I didn't raise it ...
This is, I think, one of my bigest weakness = value betting the river with a good but hand, but the nuts ... as I'm afraid of the bluff raise.

    Update:
What a day I had yesterday!
I played 800 hands more at 50NL I won $170! (Even if twice villain sucked out on me for about $20 each)
    So, after 2.2k hands at 50NL, I'm up about $165. A bit confusing as after 7k hands at 25NL, I'm down $-125 ...
Maybe I'm playing better or just hit a good variance streak?? Let's wait and see.

BTW, thanks to DA GOAT's suggestion, I took a subscription at cardrunners (it cost me $250!) and indeed, I watched a couple of vids before my sessions and I think it gave me bit of confidence on my game!
BR now is at $1900 after the cardrunners subscription.

I had been very active on this table, I had re-raised 2-3 times on the last 20 or so hands, so villain knew I didn't had the flush and I knew he didn't had either. However, he was maybe on a flush draw ... I'm not happy of the call anyway, as if he had a set I would have been in a very difficult position ...

I had another session on 50NL yesterday, but now on Poker Stars to clear the $150 bonus.
It was not a very positive session, I ended at around -$8.4 over 800 hands.

As far as my operation goes, I did a bit over 10k hands up to now and I'll not be able to reach 40k hands, even by end of August. That's not a big issue if I reach 40k only in September.

After reviewing my HH's from last night, I had a very big spew! Over 10k hands it's the first time I try a big bluff on the river and I thought I could make him fold the river with middle pair. Maybe a raise on the turn representing a set would have been much better ...
    Leave and learn!

    Update:
On the last 5 days, I played around 700 hands in 50NL more (I know it's not a lot but, I have a difficulty to find a bit of free time lately).
As for 50NL is concerned, I've played a total of 4.2k hands and I'm up $250 (which covers my Cardrunners subscription ). So 50NL is treating me very well

Current BR sits at $2000, next stop is $2500 for a first stab at 100NL.

    Small Update:
I've played some sessions from last week and my BR is up to $2050 (only $450 to go for first shots at 100NL)
For the next weeks I'm going to play only/also 6max, after having read Vi-Zer0Skill's blog, I think I have to do it to improve my post flop game. I'll post some results/hand next week.

During the past week I've played around 1000 hands of 6max 50NL for a profit of $100. I've played also a bit of FR 50NL to start clearing a new bonus for Everest.
    BR is now $2170.

Since end of last year I had the following overall objectives money wise, at the time they were very ambicious and they still are, I have changed this blog/operation to reach objective 5 ):
    1) $1000 by end December 2006 - Done! (I actually reached $1500 by December)
    2) $2500 by end June 2007 - Done! (I actually reached $3000 by May)
    3) $5000 by end June 2008
    4) $10k by end June 2009
    5) $20k by end December 2010
    6) ???
Note: I had a deal with myself that everytime I will reach a milestone I would withdraw 25-30% as a compensation for the efforts, which I have done up to now.

Objectives 1 and 2 were reached playing MTTs and SNGs (including some Party Bonuses through 10NL cash games also).

I've now decided to move to cash games to reach objectives 3 to 5.
Currently, I'm playing 50NL, I plan to move to 100NL when I reach $3000 and taking some shots at it when I reach around $2500.
Over the next 1 and half weeks, I'll play on FR to clear an Everest bonus, then I'll try to play 6max for 2 weeks.

Slowly moving up my BR. It sits now at $2240.
Almost finished clearing Everest bonus. Had a huge session yesterday night (i.e. 1000 hands) where I finished BE. If it wasn't for a huge beat! (Opp got a 1 outer on the river on a 2 buy-in pot at 50NL) No biggie! The other 99 times I'll win the pots

As July is concerned, I'm quite happy as I ended up +$560 (including $100 bonus) for 10,500 hands at 50NL FR, which is: 4.38 BB/100 hands.
However, I ended up BE after 2,000 hands at 50NL 6-max, this was not very good though ... It was my first shots at 6-max though.

As for August, my goals for the first 3 weeks (I'll leave on holidays after ) are:
    - Finish clearing Everest bonus and then move to 6-max only for 1-2 week;
    - Move to Prima with rakeback for 50NL 6-max;
    - Take a first shot at 100NL when BR is around $2400 (I think the shot at 100NL will be only FR initially as I'm much familliar with it);
    - Try to make at the least the same as in July, even if I'll play 1 week less;

I think if you are comfortable with taking a shot here and there at 100NL you really should, it's just as fishy as 50NL on Everest. When I made the move, I decided to lighten up my 3bet requirments just a wee bit against some of the regs and it has done wonders so far.
P.S. Next time someone moves down stakes to say hello, you should acknowledge them.
    Good luck.

Actually, I was sure I had already seen the nick "trashcona"! I just didn't knew it was from here
Did you said hello 2 days ago? I was 6-tabling so not much time to watch the chat ... ... Sorry!
So you moved down from 100NL or just that once?
BTW, at Everest the 100NL traffic seems low and players much tighter, at least from the pot size and % see flop, no?
  24. #24
It was a couple of days ago, I was just waiting for some more 100NL tables to open up and saw you there so dropped down to say hello. At that time of day(it would have been probably around midnight your time) the 100NL tables are pretty quite but if you're able to play earlier it's just as easy to find very fishy tables there. Even the tight regs are pretty easy to exploit, they tend to fold to much. Mix that in with the usual Everest fish and it makes for good times.

Tried my 1st session at 100NL yesterday night and it was not too good. Lost 1.5 buy-in in 600 hands. It's not a lot but it's enough for me to have to grind some more 50NL before giving another shot.
Anyway, for the next 2 weeks I'll play only 6max 50NL to improve my post flop play. I don't mind if I'll lose money, the goal is to improve my post flop game!

I've played around 2.7k hands of 6max at PRIMA and lost about 4 buy-in at 50NL. I think on most occasions I played quite well (had a couple of spews), but their software is so fast, plus you cannot see easily the HH after a hand, that I cannot get used to it (or maybe I'm just bad at 6-max!!). I created an account there for rakeback, but I don't know if it's worth playing there as the games are quite tight/aggressive (not as much as Stars). I still have huge problems playing those type games, I much more prefer the loose/passive.
So I've stopped 6-max now (at least at PRIMA) and I'll play a bit of my money making game (i.e. FR 50NL Everest), I've recovered already a bit of my loses yesterday and my BR is around $2060. Maybe I'll play a bit of 6-max at Pacific, the games are so soft that it might be better then rakeback and it might compensate the bad software ...

I agree on prima, once my bonus is cleared im gone. RB is the only profit i made from that site

Indeed, I grinded at 50NL and together with a nice Empire reload bonus, my BR is back at $2360.
Next stop: take it to about $2500 then give 100NL another try!

A small reflection on my experience at 50NL:
I really fell that the most money you'll win at this level is either through a donk with 50-100bb stack or, most often, through short stacks (i.e. 25-40bb) that would push very often on top of your c-bet and most of the time they have air/middle pair.

Awesome night I had yesterday!! I made around 6.5 buyins at 50NL.
My BR is around $2600. Ready for some shots at 100NL. Now I'll get some weeks of holidays and I'll be refreshed in September to tackle 100NL

    I just played 2 50NL sessions for a total of 1800 and I had a 3 buy-in profit.
I actually, wanted to start taking some shots at 100NL, but after 3 weeks of holidays I did not felt confident. After reviewing these sessions, thank God I did not tried 100NL My play was from average to below average, even if I made a nice profit
On the next session I'm definetively going to play 100NL 2 or 3 tables with a 2 buy-in stop-loss limit. I normally play 4-6 tables.

My BR sits now at $2750

Thanks for the comment man! (At least I see that someone reads this and it's not only for my own therapy that I'm posting this )

I've tried some of 100NL without too much success: downsing of 3.5 Buyin after 900 hands. Maybe variance/bad play/cannot get used to 100NL? Don't know. I'm just a bit annoyed with myself as the last 1/2 buy-in I lost in 100NL was due to bid of tilting, I should have stopped at 2 buy-in downswing as I mentioned in my last post.
    I'm confortably beating 50NL (i.e. 4.5 BB/100 after 25k hands), so I'll have to continue trying it.

    My BR is not $2550.
My next goal is to reach $3000 (hopefully with some TowerGaming bonus on their way ) then I'll try again 100NL. I'll move down to 50NL again if I lose more then 2 buy-ins. Continue on this process until I can win regurlaly at 100NL.

Some hands (wow, it's been a while I have not posted some ):

No reads on villain, he was there only for 10 hands or so. You can question my check on the flop, but against an average stack we win more then we loose on average, I think. Here I have to call the turn (I already saw this move from 2 pairs, TP or even air.

    Hi guys,

I would like to mention to everyone (well those that read this blog anyway ) that I am going to quit Poker online (I might play a bit live with some friends).
It has became something unberable (for me anyway). Playing from 23h-3h 3x per week (as I don't want to neglect my family if I play poker) and working on the next day is kind of difficult. Plus on the past week I had very bad results (i.e. lost about $400) it's not huge but when you make all the possible efforts to play poker here or there and then things get bad it's difficult to find the will to continue. I know that in poker variance plays a big part. I understand that I do not have the mental strenghness to cope with it with the sleeping hours I have!
I know I'm not the first one and definetively will not be the last one to quite online poker for these reasons. Those that are still playing poker don't forget to try and not overdo it or you'll be burned out also.

As a result I'm withdrawing all my money and I don't plan on playing soon. Maybe the poker bug will come back in some weeks/months but then it will be too late. I would possibly redeposit some money in the far away future, but I don't expect that to be very soon.

As I final statement I would like to thank FTR and it's amazing community. I never would have been able to win the money I won without this site and it's community!!!
    Thanks a lot!!!

I would also like to thank taipan and DA GOAT in particular for all the help they gave me!

See you some other day maybe

    Cheers!

your operation thread was really cool because you weren't afraid of overdoing it with the emoticons

But quitting poker for the reasons you stated is totally legitimate. If the desire to play poker returns to you, setting some time constraints might help to alleviate the burnout (which i can definitely relate to).

consider quitting your job or reducing your job workload.

I don't know what you do or how much you make, but it's something that should at least be given consideration.

ultimately, our resources of time and energy are finite. Between your family, friends, recreation, career and poker, sometimes something needs to be compromised. If after deliberation and considering all your options you decide poker is not for you, then that's of course perfectly legitimate. But you must follow your heart, and never be afraid to make the difficult decisions, and never succumb to peer pressure. Not to your wife, not to your boss, not to your friends on FTR. Follow your heart.

GL2U no matter what you do. FWIW, I did read your blog

Yup, I think this would certainly has to be a solution if I ever came back ...

Actually, I checked now and since I started cash games, I made $250 / month from June up to September this year, which is not great but is OK.
If I play about 2 hours x 3 times per week, that would be 6 hours of playing poker per week, I would be able to cope better (i.e. playing from 23h to 1h 3 times per week), but I know myself and within some months I'll be again playing from 23h-3h ...

As I would never quit my job for poker (unless if I'm making lots of money ), I think I'll just give it a long break.

    Cheers!

PS: If the US market joins again soon, then I might come back sooner

My post one month ago was a bit too premature!
Well, my break ended yesterday evening
The last two weeks I felt the poker bug coming and coming.

    Resolutions:
    1) I've decided to play no more then 6-8 hours / week and stop going to bed very late, which killed my will to play poker at all 1 month ago! This would be around 6k hands playing 50NL, not a lot, but at least I'll be playing poker!
    2) If I move down from $2300 in BR playing 50NL I'll go back to SNGs as Cash is not made for me!
    3) I'll move my poker goals further in the future, I don't want to pressure myself too much!

So yesterday I played around 600 hands for a loss of $-74 at Party.
BR now sits at $2520 (thank God I didn't cashout my BR with the Euro being so high ).
I decided to try it out a bit and I think I played OK after 1 month of break, if it wasn't for 2 bad beats hands I lost for a lot of $-60 I would have finished at $+46. If I would show you my PokerEV graph you would have a great laugh (i.e. show down win about $150 and actual win $0 ).

BTW, since yesterday I've been hesitating whether to play Stars (it seems that the new flux of players has brought new fish, no?? plus I have $275 bonus money there ...) or another site ... is Party really interesting at 50NL without bonus nor rakeback?

Unfortunately, I don't think I have the skills and nervs to play cash (at least for the moment).

Since my return to poker I lost $-313 playing 2100 hands at 50NL in PartyPoker and PokerStars. Initially I started to question whether or not I'm a losing player? Most of it is variance, have a look at the following graphs:

I don't want to bitch around and I know that as this is most variance I could get over it, but the thing is that I can't for the moment and I know that my game will be influenced by these loses. Therefore, I'm going back to my first love: SNGs and MTTs.

In restrospect I know I've learned a lot playing cash these last months and my post flop game has improved a great deal. Maybe one day, when I will be mentally stronger, I'll come back to cash, we'll see.

Therefore, there is no need to update this Blog anymore. Thank you again for all of those that read it!

    Cheers!
