You're right that I need to be making money between the big hands. That means getting better at playing poker - otherwise my bankroll is a slow decline between big jumps or drops. It needs to be a slow ascent, punctuated by big events. And I figure that big pots come in three flavours - play them right and the big jumps should net out positive:

1) Coolers (set over set/set under flush)
2) Races
3) Someone getting it in way ahead!

1) is probably close to breakeven long-term
2) is probably close to breakeven long-term
3) should be a big source of profit, and is easily a break-even proposition for most players. Folding is key.

and in other news, I played my first $400 pot today. 4-bet pre to take a flop heads-up and somehow AA<22!!! hate that...
