Why do I do well at tourneys but suck in a ring game? Help!

Can someone help me here? I seem to do really well at tourneys and have little trouble placing in the money 6 or 7 out of 10 sit and go's that I play. Then, everytime I try to take a stab at ring games I lose money. It goes something like this: I sit down play a few hands, hit something big like a flush and win a big pot, then I fritter the money away raising AK, AQ etc hitting nothing on the flop and folding to bets. Or, I c-bet it and get called then raised on the turn. Or, I get JJ, TT etc and an A turns up on the flop, I bet it and get raised. When I do hit something on the flop with my premium hand I win a tiny pot. All the money I made from the big pot is gone. Then, I'll hit something and my opponent will his s.t. bigger and lose half my buy in. If I bluff it seems the villain has got something... If I don't bluff I feel like I'm folding to a bluff. Can he really have hit that Q everytime I have JJ in the hole? Or I'll bet my paired ace on a flush board because I think "can he really have something everytime?" and he does.... I just can't seem to come out ahead in cash games, but yet I do well in tourneys (and i do very well at all the home games i play in). The thing is, I'd prefer to play cash games!

II've posted a whole bunch of hands that i was involved in tonight. Im not asking you to give feedback one every one, but If you could give me any general advice or specific advice on any particular hand to improve my play, it would be most appreciated...because I'm getting pretty frustrated.

If you are finishing ITM in 6-7 out of 10 SNGs that you play, you are running hot. Expected ITM percentage in 1-table SNGs is like 40-45%.

Agree with Tai however you need to realize that there are a TON of differences between cash games and SNG's. I too played SNG's for years and was profitable all the way up to the $33's. Then I switched to cash games and took a BEATING for a while. I studied relentlessly (tbh, most of what people were saying sounded greek at first but now I get a lot of it); joined a study group and played just enough tournies to keep my roll up.

Although, as I mentioned, there are a ton of differences between SNG's and Cash I will point out a few to help you focus on.

1) In SNG's most decisions are made either pre-flop or on the flop. This is because stacks are shallow and you can't just re-buy if you make a marginal decision. In cash games however most of the key decisions are made on the turn and river. You will see people float flops (one term that I didn't understand till I switched to cash games) a lot hoping that if they hit their hand they will get a bunch of money from the original bettor. This philosophy leads to the second point

2) In cash games hand reading is a critical component for success. Once you have played enough hands in cash you will get better at putting villain's on a range of hands based on position, betting pattern, etc.

3) The ability to top off your chips and/or rebuy totally changes the dynamic of the game. Most successful cash game players win a ton of small pots, some big pots, an occasional huge pot and try to avoid losing the huge pots. This means concepts like picking off blinds, c-bets, etc. become important. However there are concepts around each of these that will determine how successful you can accomplish the area.

Now let me give you some initial feedback on your specific hands, keeping in mind that I am still relatively new to cash games so others may differ in my comments.

Hand 1 - If you were in the SB and folded AJo to a CO raise then you made the right move. AJ0 is a very tough hand to play OOP and can create a situation where you end up losing a big pot.

Hand 2 - Raise pre-flop. You should rarely be limping into pots. If you want to play a hand and no one has raised, then you should raise it up. Had you raised this pre-flop your raise on the flop would have gotten more respect and villain may have folded. As played your bet on the flop is too small. With that many people in the pot put in a full PSB. Then, if you get called ask yourself what range of hands would call that bet on this board. Naturally you are priced in on the turn against the short stack, but I wouldn't be surprised to see you up against a mid pair higher than your 6's or A2s.

Hand 3 - Raise more pre-flop. At your stakes the standard raise is 4xBB plus 1 BB per limper, so your raise here would be $1.20. Flop is fine

Hand 4 - Fine

Hand 5 - Barring a read I probably play this the same

Hand 6 - Something is wrong with the converter as it shows you as UTG, but based on the betting you seem to be in the SB. I am fine with the pre-flop action, but don't lead out on the flop. Yes, you have 3rd pair and an OESD, but this board could have hit villain pretty well also. I would have checked here and MAY have called a smallish flop bet (doubtfull though as I really hate playing drawing hands OOP).

Hand 7 - Pre-flop is fine although if I thought villain would fold to a 3bet I may do that. On the flop I would probably have floated this and if checked to on the turn would have fired out a bet to steal the pot.

I will get to the rest of the hands shortly.

Some comments on the rest of the hands

Hand 8 - As discussed pre-flop raise is too small. Flop bet is WAY too small. Make it $1.5 - $1.70 and shut down if called as many players at those stakes love to play any Ace.

Hand 9 - same bet sizing issue on flop and turn. When BB checked turn I probably fire a second barrell but checking isn't horrible either. Call on the river is fine and sucks if he had a K.

Hand 10 - fine

Hand 11 - fine

Hand 12 - pre-flop is too small; Fold to the raise on the flop. What hands do you think he raises with here and how often are you going to improve to being ahead of that range.

Hand 13 - fine

Hand 14 - you can't fire a cbet on every hand and this is a good situation not too so you played it fine.

Hand 15 - fold pre-flop, fold flop, fold turn, nice bluff on river although I may have looked you up with any sort of hand as your bet looks like a busted straight draw.

Hand 16 - fine

Hand 17 - fold flop, bet larger when you hit trips on turn (PSB feels right there). I think I prefer a c/c on the river, but if you are going to put out a blocking bet make it a tad bigger

Hand 18 - I probably fold pre-flop and would DEFINITELY fold on the flop with that board. As played - fold the turn and as played fold the river. This is your worst hand played to this point.

Hand 19 - What hands do you think villain might have here and how does your hand stack up against those hands? My guess is that this is a pretty thin call to his shove.

Hand 20 - Check the flop. If villain checks behind then you can lead out on the river to try and steal the pot

Hand 21 - unless he has been stealing a lot I probably just fold this pre-flop. As played I am meh about the flop raise but love the PSB on the turn.

Hand 22 - c/c flop and when you hit the flush raise the turn. I would also through out a Half pot value bet on the river.

Like you when I started I did mostly 1 table SNG's because they were easy, switched to ring and got my ass handed to me.

Full ring is much more long term and about reading your table and your opponents. If you want to get better at ring, download some software to be able to analyze hands and see what your opponents are doing while you are playing against them. It also helps to take notes with starting hands so that when you are involved in the post flop play (like Gator says, this is most important at ring) you have a better sense of what people will limp, raise and reraise with preflop to narrow ranges.

Then, after each session take a look at key hands and figure out what you did or didn't do. It helps.

You might also want to drop down a couple of levels so that you don't have to worry about your bankroll at all while you learn the fundamentals.

Just my .02, I'm still learning as are a lot of us here. Currently I'm working on turn and river play.

my guess is that you are not used to playing 100BB deep at all times. another big factor is that peoples stack off ranges change dramatically. also try not posting so many hands in one spot i saw how many you posted and gave up.

Thanks for the responses and especially to Gator for taking the time comment on all the hands, it was very helpful. I've moved down in stakes to 10nl where losses don't bother me and I feel like I played pretty well this week.
