Default When it all goes wrong

*Sigh* seems that every idiot and his dog got lucky tonight. I had more pocket Js, Ks, As then I've ever had (I got 5 AA in 3 hours) and I only won once of any of those hands. One idiot matched my all in on the flop with a pair of threes (he had 3Qo pf and matched my 8BB prf raise... stupid assmuncher) and rivered up to beat my KK with two pair. Another fool raised AI preflop when I had AA. He had Q 9, and the flop brings a 9, the turn brings a 9 and to add insult to injury the river gives him a Q.... I guess I should be happy these people exist... but when you loose 4 buy ins and 2 $5 S'n'G's from bad beats.... anything I can do to make this downswing a bit better? Tighten up or just keep playing my game? I probably should have stopped at 2 buy ins loss, but I got dealt KK right after AA in one case so I thought I should definately stick around to play that (ended up losing).

The Js you need to be cautious with, they're not that great of a hand. But there are not enough details her to comment on that. AI preflop with your As and Ks is just unfortunate. YOu have to remind yourself that poker is only down to luck in the short-term, in the long run it all evens out. If you looked at your play history you'd find there have been times when you've had stints of good fortune too. Though it can be hard to spot at times as the bad tends to stain memories more readily.

You can't let this stuff bother you. What more can you ask for?

Keep getting the money in the middle of the table when you have the best of it and let the cards fall where they may.

I don't think you've really done anything wrong by the look of those hands. T'was a good day for the fish, but your fortunes will turn.

You've identified that you played badly on the last hand and looking at your other hands it is most likely tilt, depending on your read you might have folded after the $4.75 but the $20 should have pushed a fold on your part lest he be known to bluff on a big scale.

I suppose the lesson is not only to tollerate suck outs, but also to know when to quit for the day due to tilting.

I can't believe someone called your all in bet with a pair of 3's and rivers the queen for two pair... play against this person any chance you get.

I can do you one better...

I have AA and raise preflop. Get a single caller. Board comes QQK rainbow. I raise get reraised, I reraise all in, get called.... turn is J, river is J.... the guy turns over JT offsuit for the win.
  8. #8
I can see his logic- if he had TJ with QK on the board, any 9 or A would have given him a straight, I see people call with an open end straight draw all the times especially with two cards to come. It was a bad beat that he got JJ to match his J, but any A or 9 would have just been hitting his draw. I don't know what the value of the bet and pot is so can't comment on pot odds (and chances are he/she had no idea about these odds either), but it might not actually be as bad a call as it sounds.

You're right, but he didn't have pot odds (I put him all in) and I had reraised someones preflop raise and he called both to stay in the hand. You're right, he had some outs, but on a board were someone could have a made full house... considering the strength I showed preflop KK was not out of the question...

So he's betting with the second best hand hoping to improve to a hand that may still be second best... and he'll take that risk with all his chips?? Seems to be negative EV all the way.

And this is not even my worst JT beat, I posted a hand history from another one in a different thread... sorry to rant and hijack the post. Thanks for listening and for the feedback.

I love reading posts and recognizing that three of the poeple at the table are FTR posters.
They weren't involved int he hand, so you can't take it out on 'em, though.
    You played this right, IMO.
I'm going to check my PT stats to see if I've ever played you, Rob. Then I'm going to put in a note so I remember you're FTR-bro.

Preflop as an opener? Definitely not. You want people to pay to play the hand, but you don't want to force out any/all action you might be getting.

    Hey Renagade Rob --
I have a real small sample on you from sitting at the tables last night. I didn't do too well either, and didn't have enough sense to get up and move.
Out of 183 hands I played with you, you were fairly evenly distributed on position
    button 23%
    co 23%
    co-1 31%
    mp3 44%
    mp2 31%
    mp1 20%
    ep2 33%
    ep1 11%
    bb 23%
    sb 65%

Again, this is a small sample, but I think your play should be weighted to the button, co, and bb/sb, but you are playing 29% of your hands, and playing many from the middle. Fold that KJ in EP. You lost $66 at this table. Move if you lose two buyins. My six cents.

BTW, I only took $3.50 from you, after you won 4 hands and I won 6.
    See you at the tables.
    I'm a know-it-all.

    No, really.
  14. #14
    Hey eeee,

thanks for that post, I hadn't looked at my position stats until now - they pretty much match what you posted although I play 32% of hands from the button over a larger sample (less from SB). I'll definately have to change that, althought I never play junk unless I'm BB and I can check or unless I'm playing a tourny(most of my early - mid position plays are either limps with OK cards, low PP or Axs unless I get a monster that is)

I really have to learn to give up KJ, even if I limp and get a K or J on the board; I'm making 3.28 BB/100 with KJs and -2.62BB/100 with KJo.

I didn't realise how many FTR posters I'd been playing against! I've had a look through my pokertracker and noticed a few other names from here. Is there a post where people have put up their screen names from poker rooms?
  15. #15
Just wanted to say thanks to everyone that replied
Had a good day today ($125 profit ) and all the hints really helped - I continued to play my game but tightened up in earlier positions (especially that KJo). Hopefully this will keep up for a bit - I want to get my BR up to $450 by the end of two weeks (I'm currently just over $200).

See you all at the tables
