Default What skills/plays are necessary to beat 10NL ?

I'm playing in this days 10NL full ring and I wonder if I try to do plays that not necessary in this level .

The play that I mean are : Floating , Re-stealing from the blinds , double barreling floating regs and 3beting regs lightly .

I would like to hear what skills and plays are MUST have on 10NL and what can wait for the next limit .

    Thanks in advance

There's no such thing as not necessary, you aim to maximize ev. And you can run into player where those strategies will either work or fail at any level. If they are costing you money then you are probably picking bad spots and/or haven't played enough hands. And if they are costing you $ at 10nl then you aren't going to step up to 25nl and magically be able to win with them without learning to pick good spots.

I'm a winning 10nl and losing 25nl player. These advanced plays, such as floating and restealing, are not necessary to win at 10nl, but it's something that you need to be able to do at 25nl imo, so 10nl is the place to start bringing these plays into your game if you have ambition to play at higher levels.

Skills I think you must have to win at 10nl...

    Put villain on range.
    Understand pot odds and probability.
    Understand the importance of position.
Pot control (not getting too aggro with top pair KJ for example).
    Careful table and seat selection.
The ability to fold top pair and overpair if it's getting too much heat.

I also think if you intend to step up to 25nl and not lose quickly, you should slowly start to implement these aspects into your game...

    Floating.
    Restealing.
    Re-restealing.
    Polarised range.
    4bet bluffing.
    Compulsive note taking.

There's probably tons I've missed out, but these points I make are part of the reason, I believe, that I can win at 10nl but not 25nl. The first list I am strong. The second list I am weak. I'm currently playing 10nl, and I'm trying to improve on that second list so I am better prepared when I step up again.

same skills as 2nl and 5nl, add in better table selection
adjusting to regs at this level isn't 'necessary' to beat 10nl, but you should still make an effort to do so

You can start by being a uber nit. And if you manage to beat NL10 with that strategy, then everything else is unnecessary. Unless you wanto increase your winrate a bit.

Thank you guys for the replies .

OngBonga , according to the skills you stated above , what stats should I use on my HUD ?

When I run my HUD (which I don't often) I have it set to...

    VP$P / PFR / FT3B

Though if I'm honest, I have got to the point where I prefer to make notes and use those. I have an old computer, and when my HUD is running, the fan is constantly running, which annoys me to hell. I find I don't need it at 10nl, though I wouldn't dream of playing 25nl without it.

Oh, and when looking for a table, I will scan all the tables looking for notes, and try to sit to the left of someone I have an essay on.

Canada; the country all tucked away down there...
The skills that I find important at 10nl are prob not necessary to beat it but I think it adds onto the winrate which is great...

Steal lots (against the players who can fold pre) from late position
Resteal from the blinds vs a LP steal if they have the right stats to do so. (I use hands like sm-mid PP and AsXs hands). I float vs a reg I have lots of hands on and I see he is raising pre with most of his range (mid to late position) and he cbets a high %.

The thing I find most important to beating the level is the same for 2nl and 5nl; fold to aggression vs a passive player.

My HUD is basic. I have vpip, pfr, aggression, cbet stat, fold to cbet, 3 bet, fold to 3bet, steal %, fold to steal. Thats about it.

there obviously isn't a list, but if i were to guess at some of the most important skills (outside of the most obvious things like basic BR management, understanding of pot odds etc):

    - learn to value bet
    - learn who/when/what/why to isolate
    - " " " " " to Cbet
    - learn how to steal blinds (and become positionally aware in the process)

obviously, there is no actual list, and no substitute for learning how to form/deal with ranges (your opponents and your own), and coming to understand why certain strategies work against certain opponents in certain spots.

This will be too simple but

    Raise pre and c-bet
    Bet for value
Control the pot size when not against retards
    Fold more to raises
Fold more to raises (repeated for emphasis)
Make less mistakes than your opponents ie fold more
Stop doing anything that doesn't involve the above ie floating and 3 betting light

    feelin' allright
fold, fold, fold, fold, fold, fold, fold, bet/raise for value, ONLY open raise pre (no open limping)

oh, and did I mention fold

that's a bit simplistic, but seriously... Don't tell yourself that "this guy's so bad that there is no way I'm folding to that raise". Instead tell yourself that "this guy's normally so passive that there is no way I can continue to that raise".

    Fold
    Value Bet

    In that order.
