Default What kind of villain notes do you take?

I searched the forums for this, couldn't find it so i thought I'd post it here. My apologies if it does exist, I would love to read it. I think it would benefit new players and save them a lot of wasted time and confusion.

I've often read about the importance of note taking to better exploit our opponents tendency's, but haven't really found anything beyond that. So, knowing only that I should be taking notes, i started doing just that. But looking at my notes even a month later, I'm reading stuff like "checks down 77"; which is just a terrible note and says nothing about position or flop texture, bet sizing, etc, and "58s utg+1"; again, no useful information other than that player sucks.

Just today i had sort of an epiphany which all the veteran players are probably like "you didn't know that? lol". I started looking at players tendencies differently. I noticed one player would always c bet a paired flop like Q55, then check/fold the turn. I wrote it down and took down a bunch of pots. Another player would 3bet in the bb vs. btn steals a ton, but would check/fold the flop if called.

Of course it takes many hands to start seeing a pattern, which led me to my next thought... open up my database on players i play the most and write notes on them with the hand reviewer!(once again probably information veterans have had forever, but exciting for a noob like me). So what was "checks down 77" turned into "will flat call with pp ip, if she calls the flop cbet, its a set."

Anyway, I didn't mean to ramble on this long (I even deleted a paragraph or two), I meant to ask for feedback on what kind of notes you guys take. Thanks!

Seems like you've got the idea. You're looking to figure out general tendencies rather than "this one time he....". Of course several notes on specific hands may coordinate to reveal a tendency. I've read several of your posts over the past few days and I think you're really starting to get it. Keep it up.

any kind of note that helps you to define a villain range when he performs an action pre and/or post flop
All posts are just my own opinion about a hand or a general situation... not advices on how you should play...

take notes on stuff that stands out, obv.

I think spots where he defines what his range might be in what could be a polarized spot is interesting:

    1. If he shows up light in a 3-bet pot especially a squeeze spot.
    2. What kind of hand he has when he donks the flop.
    3. What he check-raises flop with.
    4. Does he play his draws fast?
    5. If he shows up in a spot where he flatted AA/KK/AK pre.

    etc.
Playing big pots at small stakes.

i take notes on preflop tendencies by position. things like limp/3-betting, limp/folding, 3b/folding, 4b/folding, any hand i see them get it in with preflop.

also, postflop stuff like if i see them double or triple barrel bluff. how they play draws/whether they semi-bluff flops etc. whether or not they float flops or not. whether they ever C/R bluff. that kind of shit.

also, i will note whether they seem to be able to handread, whether they seem to adjust or be a robot, and what they are likely to think of me based on what they've seen me showdown/do while i've been sitting with them.
