was this the right play?

At the local bar I play on Mondays, usually around 20 of us get together and play two games. There are a couple of strong players and a ton of fish-I would say I am a little better than the fish. This is the first hand of the game. I was holding A9 suited and bet 3xBB and have one fish caller. Board comes A69. Villian bets 1/3 of his stack . I know from experience that he is holding an A,x probably AT-AK. I raise AI he calls and flips over AJ, turn J, River 3. I am waiting for the next game to start. I know percentage wise I was a heavy favorite to win, but I was wondering if pushing AI is a good idea here. I knew what he had and figured he would call any reraise and I would double up early. If I would have called, he most likely would have pushed AI on the turn and I would have thought a little harder and may have been in the tournament. When is it right to go AI early in a tournament? Was this move okay?

Yea the move was ok either as a pot steal, or like you said if you knew he was gonna call and u had him dominated well over 4 to 1 the move was fine, it was just a bad beat, honestly though, i dont think there was a lot in the pot at that time, so i woudlnt have moved all in, but like you said if you KNEW he was calling then that was the right move cause you had him dominated

as a quick rule
if you get ypur money all in with the best hand at that point dont analise the hand for mistakes. You made the right move.
Therefore here you were simply outdrawn by 3 outs. That yuky

Just always rememer why you did what you did and why it was the right move.

Thanks for the replies. I was wondering a little bit about the timing of the move...first hand of the tourney. Would Phil Ivey go AI in the same situation if he knew he was going to get a call and possibly double up early? The good players seem to make it deep in the tournament and I wonder if this was an unecessary risk? Is there any "rules" about pushing early in a tournament?
