fold pre. What are you looking to hit to win the hand? And if you do get a good flop are they likely to pay you off when they limped in and a flop thats good for you is likely to miss them. |

i'll elaborate a bit. there are 8 cards out of 47 unknown cards in the deck which make your straight, so you make a straight on the turn 8/47= 17% of the time, or roughly one out of six times (or 5:1 against hitting). you are getting immediate pot odds of 2:1, so when you call you need to make 3 units of the flop bet off your opponent on the turn in order for the play to be breakeven (you are getting 2:1 pot odds and you are 5:1 against making a straight, the difference between 2 and 5 is 3). however, only 6 of your straight outs don't make 4 cards to a flush on the board. so you make a flush without 4 spades on the board 6/47=12% (roughly 8:1 against), making it even harder to breakeven with your call. whats more, some of the time you call and hit your straight but your opponent already has a flush. hopefully you can see now why calling has a negative expectation. | |

99% of the time I fold this pre and never question it. Lately, I have been experimenting with playing straight cards when I think someone is weak. Even at that, without being suited and with my tremendous position(sarcasm) I would normally still fold quickly. This was in a live MTT and I had just won a big pot. I was stacking my chips, and out of the corner of my eye, I caught what appeared to be uncertainty from the button. I really had intentions of trying a bluff on the flop. After the flop, I didn't want to lead to represent the flush and then get raised and have to fold. |

IF you are chasing a straight, and there is a possible made flush already on the board, I think a newbie can figure this one is a fold. |
