FTR Has helped me generate about $2,000 over the last two summers. It is a very large amount for me , but that was also my entire roll. Still, this helped pay for many an enjoyable party over the course of the last two years, probably about 5-7 partys in all. (Cheap kegs FTW?)

Anyway, after various cashouts, I had no money on poker stars, at least until I got bored and turned my FPP into $T. I've got about $30 and my goal is to work this into a workable bankroll. My goal is to claim that my entire poker winnings are from these FPP, even if it slows down my progress a bit.

I mostly play SnGs these days, and the players at the 1.20 level seem a fishy as ever (but fuck that 20% rake). I've never considered myself a good cash game player, mostly because i don't find 4+ tables at a time to be fun.

anyway, I'm not entirely sure as to why I'm posting this, other than to say hello, thanks, and provide some background.

i dont know what to tell you if you dont want to play cash games. i think you would be playing a lot of tourneys, for a long time, before seeing any real results. the variance at a $1.20 SNG has to be brutal. they are beatable, as you well know, but i would mix in some cash WHILE i was playing in a tourney.

nothing builds a br faster than a cash game fish who reloads.

i have been playing in the 1.2's on stars for about 3 months
my bankroll hoovers at about $35-50

the variance is silly and the rake is prohibitive
if you want to build your BR get out of those things(1.20)
try cash games

i play for fun so it doesn't matter to me

A killer? Aren't we talking about the difference of a dime between 10% and 20% here? I know the guy's br is very tight right now, but....

And how much do you expect to win per tourney? If you're making a 25% ROI you're doing very well, which means losing a dime means losing about 35% of your winnings!

its not the dime, its the % of BI that never makes it to the prize pool. that makes it much slower to climb to another level. besides, the longer it takes you to get out of the donkamental abyss, the more you subject yourself to cruel variance. variance is always there, true, but i believe its at its worst when people are only playing for a buck.

Lets assume your ROI in a game with 10% rake is 20%, which is a decent ROI for a good player.
With buy in X and Rake 0.1X long term you win
0.2*1.1X = 0.22X, suppose I tell you you have to pay 0.1X more for each game, now your average win is 0.22X-0.1X = 0.12X, so you lose about 50% of your profit over the rake.

Going a step further I would say that if the rake was 30% (i.e $1+30c) the game would be pretty much unbeatable

Ok, so OP was obviously drunk when he made that post and is in a similar state right now ( I only post on FTR while wasted, obv.). Really, once I realised that poker could pay for beer I was absolutely stoked about the game. And although I'm expecting to pay for a bit more than beer this time around, any money I can gain from poker is awesome.

Anyway, thanks for all the kind words, and I completely agree than the fucking rake is kicking my ass, fortunately I know that I can beat the 5+50s and really any Mtt <$5.

Therefore, despite an 18% ROI in the fucking 1+ .20 bullshit touneys. I've run really really absurdly well (+120% ROI) while taking a couple shots at the $4 +40 180s (also a 5 card draw $4 +.40 tourney, I kick ass at that game and I could go on a long tangent about how playing 5cd has vastly improved my ability to read players, but I'll save that for when I can beat more than just fish at 5cd.) and one 5 +.50 NLHE SNG.

My roll is currently at $60 and things are looking up.

My stance on cash games is that I get really bored doing the same thing all the time, I'm a somewhat proven winner (at least before the ban I was) @ 25NL, but really, I can't concentrate while playing cash games, I don't find them enjoyable and I tend to get too agressive (I get bored if I can't justify stealing blinds).

So anyway, thanks for all the replies, I'll start posting some questions soon.
