A tactic of mine

Hey guys, here is a tactic of mine i have been using which has been some what succesfull at times! If I am able to limp into a hand for cheap with say a 10 8 and the flop comes 10 3 5. Ill make a large enough bet that possibly only 1 person will call. Probably someone who caught there A K and doesnt want to give it up. Next card ill bet hard again and usually be able to take down the pot.

Now dont get me wrong im not betting to large, but i usually find a table full of tight players and am able to bully them away. Is this tactic going to get me burned? I usually use it here and there to change up my style. From tight to loose etc.

the easiest way to tell if this working - review the hands you do this with in poker tracker and see if it is profitable in the long run.

i would think that this tactic would be a pretty large leak:

- only a few flops work with you
- you're going to run into a lot jt, t9 (suited or not) hands that will call you down, but probably won't play it too hard because of their marginal kicker. i would fear the hand that calls your "large enough bet that only 1 person will call"
- with two cards to come, you and they need to fear overcards falling
- you're up against limping hands like AT, KT, QT (suited or not)
- on a flop like that, a 99 hand might reraise, then what do you do?

it seems like a small edge to push - i would just look at it closely to see if it's really working versus it worked really well a couple of times.

id usually do this if im in good position and see that everyone checks to me after the flop. Ive used this is SNG's against smaller stacks who are very tight players.

However, Sngs have very different circumstances. As Rippytide has said many times before, stack can sometimes be more important then the cards.

I don't think this kind of tactic would be profitable in the end on ring tables. You're putting money in to see a flop which will normally generate overcards and there is also the possibility you're being slow played the entire time. I wouldn't like this tactic, but I am moving towards more tight style.

this type of play is much more effective when you've raised preflop. you have a lot less "pushing authority" on the flop when you've limped preflop. plus, if you get a call, pairing a card in your raising hand (e.g. AQ) has a good chance of winning a showdown.

sng's are a whole different thing - ditto what bigred said.

Leak. Are you sure you didn't do this once and adopt it as a winning tactic?

I can't say anything useful here without more information. It just depends on who you play with, position, other action, how many callers... all kinds of stuff. In general I wouldn't be betting too hard with a pair of tens (even top pair) and a poor kicker, but there's a time and a place for every play, even the most seemingly inexplicable (like pushing with 27o).

im not to convinced with this strategy, lets say 2 out of three times the opp in the bet folds leaving you with the blinds and maybe a 7BB pot. Howevere later on you may encounter someone who is slow playing you, just calling all of your bets to the river, where hell go all in, making you loose a lot of chips if you call and if you dont youll also loose a lot of chips(the bets you made post flop and on hte turn and river) and on top of that you wont be able to see what the other player had.

I would suggest you follow fishsticks advice and follow pockertracker to see how this tactic works for you.

if they player doesnt fold and a card higher then 10 hits the flop then yes i do run, to avoid being slowplayed.

normally if I hit this hand, I would check the flop, bet the turn.. If someone bets small behind me on the flop, I might call and do a lead bet on the turn. Not a hand I want to lose or win alot a money from...

There are specifics to every situation that makes me say this is not a great plan to apply always.

However, in the specific example you gave, I'd do this in a tournament all the time. bet top pair. On a scary board, if you are sure you have the best hand, but it is vulnerable, overbet top pair.

But limping in with a much wider array of hands may not be best.
