I ask this stupid question because it has happened to me twice in the past week.

Two-player hand on the flop, both of us with full stacks and I hold something decent like QQ out of position, bet out flop and get called, same on turn, and the river makes a straight on the board with no flush possibilities (something like 4-8), counterfeiting my queens. I checked the river, figuring a chop and trying to keep the rake down. But villain bets out about half a buy-in. Do I call this bet? Or should I have beat him to the punch and bet out myself? I hate dumb, trivial decisions like this when I'm just trying to play decent poker. Seems kinda meta-game, but how do you play it?
