Default So let's boil it all down!

First off, just want to say that I am REALLY, REALLY glad I found this board. I'm starting to embark on learning this game, and I'm pretty certain that this find will make it much, much easier.

    A couple basic questions:

If you were a beginner right now...
    1. What poker room would you play first?
    2. What level of play?
    3. What things would you read/learn BEFORE you ever start bankroll play?

    Thanks again!

    Best,
    EW

    1. It depends on what game you would most like to play (NLHE/LHE, MTT/SnG/Ring).
    2. It depends on how much you are willing to deposit.
    3. It depends on what game you most want to play! I would also recommend Theory of Poker regardless.

You just need to give us some more specifics so we can give you a good opinion on how you should be starting up.

Honestly, I wanted to make it a more general thread, to help whomever happened across it -- nothing worse than the kid that interrupts class to ask questions that only pertain to him

I'm pretty open to any limits or games...I think, more importantly, it's finding the game the TEACHES me the most right now.

So, Theory of Poker is a good one, eh? I'll have to get that.

Others learn from the kid who interrupts, so let's make this about you. give us yoru details and you'll get specific advice for what you want to accomplish.

    Welcome to FTR

    1. Figure out the game you want to play, go to the FTR poker room review section, pick 2 that seems to fit the type of game you want and start there.
I mostly play Sngs and I play at pokerstars mostly

    2. Read the bankroll sticky. Since you are a beginner I would suggest that start in the lowest buy in in which winning or losing will mean something to you

    3. This depends on the game you want to play. Read the stickies in the relevant forum

Thanks for the welcome. This is a really friendly forum!

I'm a horseplayer who happened across High Stakes Poker on GSN, and I'm enthralled. My bills have been paid on risk versus return, and now, I realize the similarities between betting the horses and playing poker...

In reality, I would like a potential money making endeavor while horses are not running.

A couple people on this forum (and a friend of mine) seem to think I'd be better at limit because I'm pretty mathematical. However, since I'm new to poker, I'm pretty open to all experiences.

As far as buy-in, I suppose I could go pretty high, but -- just like anyone else -- I don't want to lose $$ unnecessarily...I guess I'm looking for the lowest buyin with "true" play, but still at level that I can learn and possibly beat.

    Best,
    EW
