SnG v/s ring

I am still very new to holdem. I have read alot of material, and played in around 3000 online hands and about as many live. Poker Tracker rocks.

But I keep loosing on ring games. I am sure it is a style issue. I need to adjust how I play in each. I havn't played any SnG on Party, but that is all I play live. Since I always place ITM in the live SnG games, I was debating attempting the same on Party? Any suggestions or thoughts on this topic.

Why would a person do better in one over the other.

Ring and Sng are two different forms of games that require different skill sets.
Ring games do not have an history and each hand is judged by its own merit. I think that for ring game you need more discipline and a structured game plan and that you execute (at least in the lower buy ins, when people do not really notice how you play).
Tournament requires better adaption skills and the ability to react to a lot of different conditions that occur during the game.

If I invite a group of guys (6 for example) to my house. And each drops in $10 And gets $950 in chips. Would this be considered a SnG? Or more like a small tourny. At any rate I seem to do much better in this style of play. I lose focus after sitting at a ring game for a while. And the people coming and going seems to through off my grove.

Sng is a subset of a tournament. Sng is a single table tournament. People usually however use the term tournament to refer to multi table tournament, and Sng to refer to a single table

Ask as many questions as you want, there is no such thing as too many questions or a stupid question.
The great thing about this forum is that you will get good answers to every question from the very basics to advanced issues, by all means keep the questions coming...

Play SnG's. I don't know about party, I think the $5 Sngs have a $1 rake, which is too much. There are plenty of sites to play like Pacific, which is a very soft SnG that you can play for as low as $1.50 (still stupid large rake) but their $4/.50 and $5/.50 are good values. There are other sites too. I would stick to games that are easy to beat, which Party and Pacific certainly fall into.

I say play SnG's because ring games take never ending patience. Where SnG's are defined. They have a beginning, a middle and an end. If you can get a feel for how people react as the blinds go up and play smart, then you can do well. Also, new players tend to lose focus over time. SnG's help because they are very defined timewise, and ifyou play them one at a time they force you to take breaks.

On a side note. I played in a small game last night with some buddies and took them all down. But it is easier when you know who your up against.
