Default Settle a simple argument someone?

My colleague and I just played a game of poker. The stakes were high.

I turned over QQ 55 for two pair.

He turned over JJ 99 for two pair.

    Who won?

    Thanks

high stakes and no Idea which pair counts? High pair takes the pot. second pair matters if the first is the same i.e: QQ 99 vs. QQ 77. What's high stakes?

I still remember how, some time ago when I was very new still, I figured this one out.

I somehow got into a raised pot with J9, and the flop was J92.. and we went all-in, and opponent flipped AA. So I was thinking "muhaha only an ace can save him now, I got this one!".. so the turn comes something like 6, good no ace! Then the river comes 2, and while I'm sighing of relief that there was no ace.. the pot goes to my opponent! Wtf? Oh yeah.. it's now AA 22 vs JJ 99.. and highest pair wins. Damn..

    Hope this helps

    QQ/55 wins.

Also, how can you ask a question like this after a post where you say

    50/50 whether it's 2's or 8's.

I'd bet out... See where I am... I couldn't go all-in on a 50/50 like that. I'd tell him I have the eights with a big raise, and if he re-raises, then he'd confirm that he has me beat.

    Unless he sucks.

He asked a question and got an answer, no need to go further than that.

I would think he's getting third party proof for the benefit of his unenlightened buddy.

Fair enough, i'll accept that. Was just curious, don't mean anything more. Maybe I asked it wrong.

Yeah, he hasn't played much... He wouldn't believe that top pair wins and not combined kicker value.

I said I'd post on a poker forum to prove I was right and he agreed.

Thanks to all who settled it.

    I'm absolutely terrified of this.

    samcheeseman,

Tell your friend that the same concept applies to full houses as well. For example, a full house of 44422 beats a fullhouse of 333KK.
