Yeah, I think that strategy is sound. After the turn, and everyone checks to you, you are really looking at buying the pot at that point. If your straight is open-ended you have a 17% chance of hitting your river card. But combined with the odds of everyone folding (depending on how many players are in, the general play of the table, etc) betting at this point could be a good move. If your bet is less than 17%, you'll be getting good odds with any callers, if you bet is more, then you probably have a better shot at buying the pot. You'll have to weigh these options during the battle.
