Really mad at how I went out, what could I have done?

Hey guys, Im a new guy here, and I was looking for some help on a couple tourney hands. Sorry, I dont have the hand history (didnt realize they werent auto saving).


I was playing in a $10 multitable table tourney, about 700 entrants. We are ITM, 30ish people left. I have about 30,000 chips, villian has about 50,000. Blinds are 600/1200.

I am the SB. I am dealt QQ.

First to act raises to 4000.

All fold. I re-raise to 15000.

Flop comes A J T rainbow.

I push, and get stacked by KQ.

Obviously a mistake to push? Is this always a check/fold no matter what?

How do I not lose tournaments in this position? It seems to happen to me constantly, where my huge raise gets called and I lose with premium hand to garbage late in multitable tournaments. I definitely need help with my ITM game.

Need to know your stack sizes and opponent's position. Every detail like this is important and can make a difference in how we should play. If you don't have the HH, you need to wait for one like this. Or make it up, but if you make it up it's a straw man discussion.

Im not sure if you actually read my post, because all of that information is in there.

Your play was acceptable. I would have played it differently however. Under the gun standard raise should demonstrate some stength unless he has been LAG all tournament. With your reraise of 15k, you are committed to the pot and really committing him to it as well. If you check down and lose or fold on flop or turn to shove you only have 12 bb left and are in short stack mode. If you are willing to commit yourself with QQ, then shove then and there. Faced with a shove of 60 - 70% of their stack, most KQ will go away. Also, you will get some loose calls with middle pairs because they think that they have a flip against AK as this is a common move with AK. Second way I would play it would be like a bubble situation or a cash game situation. Keep it small. Call, check-call flop or check-fold if overs come. I like QQ and JJ but sometimes you have to play them like 22. Sets are the money makers. If I had to chose which one to play, unless it was a bubble situation, I play the first one. If I come up against KK or AA, I can live with that. Hope this helps.

Oh, I guess the info was in there, an I thought "first to act" could have meant any position, but you must have meant UTG. Anyway, you'll get a lot more replies if you post a real hand history so the info is all in a standardized format.

You didn't have enough in your stack to make that raise. Need to shove preflop because you can't fold if an A or a K comes out.

^^ shove preflop, exactly. To bet half your stack for only a raise and give him a chance to hit a flop, JUST LIKE THIS is a mistake in most situations. If you shove chances are he'll fold KQ unless you have seen him playing alot of garbage hands he might think KQ is worth more then half his stack.
Otherwise you could have just called the raise since everyone else has already folded and saw the flop cheap. Once he moves on a flop like this then you know it's time to give up and you didn't lose alot of chips.

wrong forum. there is a forum for multi-table tourney strategies, which will be able to help you better than us beginner cash-game players. i think that shipping it in is the best play here if you are happy to get all-in preflop against this guy's range.

yeah narco, check out the MTT forum, lots of good stuff in there for us tourney players. Personally I don't push there. I'm really, really pissed and end up folding because you know the guy is going to try to get all the $ in the pot.
About the hand, your re-raise pre is ok, except that it's 1/2 your stack. Consider the next time that you're in this spot, just shoving pre. Depending on the situation, it might be the right play. If you shove pre, you have a great chance to take down $5800 which at this point is substantial to your stack. Remember the 10BBs rule when you're getting short in a tourney? Same concept here, the $ already in the pot is too large to raise and then end up folding if your opponent plays along. If you're committing to this hand, do it before he sees the flop. This way you also don't have to face any A high or K high flops and wonder if you're screwed or not.
