Default Question about the NL ring strategy

In the beginner's digest is this very informative and extensive post from Renton: Renton's 169 hand SS-NLHE ring strategy: Preflop

The thing is that in several places he recommends limping preflop or calling raises whereas the popular opinion in the forums is to not limp preflop. So what is his reasoning?

It was written 4 years ago ,when men were men and boys had their toys . limping was fashionable then . There was a recent request for Renton to update it , I think Renton pointed out that people of his calibre would rather earn money coaching.

    Still an excellent article though.

Actually , iv'e not read this article for over a year , i'm pleased you brought it back . It makes more sense to me now. Id say im not qualified to say it needs updating .

And Renton is specific about limping

I typically raise pocket pairs 99 and up. Some people limp 99 and TT under the gun, I don’t.

....If you limp these hands you will have to play a one pair hand out of position in a multiway pot, which is not too fun to do, and not too profitable either.....

You can limp the other pocket pairs 88 and lower in a loose fishy game.

As you become a stronger player, limping big suited connectors and suited aces becomes profitable, but they’ll only add to your variance and frustration if you play them as a novice.

And he's right. I limp in live games a lot because I can get away with it. Online, not so much. I wouldn't say that post needs updating since it's just a framework. You still have to come to your own conclusions. It's as comprehensive as you want to make it out to be.
