Patience

I seem to be a much better live game player than online and I think I have traced it back to the source. Its easier to wait on good hands when you are conversing and having a good time than it is when you are watching a computer screen waiting for the next hand to begin after folding a mediocre hand like K/9 before the flop for the third straight time.

Any advice on how to beat the boredom? Do you guys surf in the background while you play (I've heard this is a bad idea as you dont always get the proper read on the table) or do you play more mediocre hands than you would in a live game? I think this is one of my last hurdles to becoming a consistently profitable player.

Definitely not.

Surf FTR. Play multiple tables. Watch TV. Listen to music.


Personally, I get more impatient playing live games. It's soooooo slooooooow, compared to online multi-tabling.

Thanks I must admit that music and FTR help FTR especially since it not only is a diversion but both keeps your mind on poker and helps your game.

How could I ever get impatient with so very much stuff to find and laugh at?

i watch the high rollers, when they're available. 100-200 rooms on royal vegas, when they play, there's always someone with ~100k playing against a few shorter stacks. i just find it amazing to watch them throw around 3 and 10 and 30 thousand dollar bets sometimes. other day some guy bet 30k on a bluff, twice. first time, he won 7k off it, second time he lost it all. ridiculous.

if they're not on, i read ftr, join another room, join a .5/.10 limit game or a cheap 7 card stud game or something to mess around with, watch tv, whatever. if i'm getting really impatient, i'll take a break.

Multi-tabling will be your cure. When you have 4 good hands at once it starts to get a little hectic, but definitely a lot easier to wait for a decent hand..

my friend that played in the Tunica MS WPT this january said he saw a guy push 60k in on a bluff in a 10-25 NL cash game, got called and lost it all.

I have the same problem and surfing on the web just makes me loose concentration. Now I play two tables at the same time and it works fine for me. I can't handle more than two, but with two tables I get enough hands to keep me focused. Actually it improves my play by making me fold poor hands quicker. Getting bored makes me play too many hands.

If you watch the players, you can pick up on some tells or bluffs that could help you later in the game. Its not as obvious as RL, but they are there..

That's a really good point. There's usually enough going on that you can practice your skills without having to be involved in the hand. In fact a huge chunk of your reading skills can be developed with paying attention to hands you are not in.

Funniest thing I've found so far on Ebay was a guy selling his AIR GUITAR. The photo was hilarious, and he had three bidders so far.

best auctions ever are the ones about jesus on ebay. i never realized just how bad people are. i've seen: a candle that melted into the shape of mary holding jesus, a picture of mary holding jesus in the clouds, a picture of jesus that was on a door (like, the wood grain was darker in the bottom middle of the door, in the shape of jesus, and he was selling the door...).

i think there was also a grilled cheese sandwich with a picture of howard stern drawn on it in sharpie...

I don't multi-table. I treat online poker like a live game. I watch people. I usually have music on though.

play live is like heaven compared to online...i also get very impatient staring at computer screens all day i listen to music too

I think not paying attention is one of my biggest leaks. I don't multitable, generally... It's not for me... but I'll read email, surf FTR, Be listening to music, and often watchng television while playing. I KNOW I'm missing good information...

The one thing I've actually found helpful is the IRC chatroom. I can at least be on there griping about the hands that I should be paying attention to.
