overpairs

how do you play overpairs upon resistance? [with no reads]

EG you bet the pot or 3/4 at flop and get re-riased - I normally push all-in.

Obviously you want to be against TPTK or a drawing hand but I seem to be finding im up against 2pair or a set most of the time. I may adjust my play and start folding overpairs to flop re-raises (with JJ and below) but with QQ-AA i may be tempted to continue to push against big resistance.

Whats everyones ideas? I play $20nl 6 max

I play them like what they are - a pair, not a money-printing machine. I bet the flop aggressively. If raised, I may re-raise for further info, assuming the re-raise isn't pot committing either me or my opponent. If I want to re-raise but think it will pot commit one or both of us, I just push all in. I decide whether or not to re-raise based on my read on the player - how loose and how aggressive they are - as well as my read on the board. If there's three to a straight or flush, or a pair on the board, I may take it on faith that they have me beat & therefore let it go. Folding to a hidden set or two pair is harder, but sometimes you can just sense these things. I am more likely to go all in on the flop in a short-handed game than in a full ring, where sets are more likely because more pairs are being dealt out.

Shorthanded, pushing here is probably a good bet in the long run. You'll get a lot of calls from TPTK, and over pairs that are lower than yours if you are holding QQ-AA. You'll also get a lot of folds from people on draws who were trying to buy it. Like chez said, you still have a lot of outs to beat 2 pair. A lot of times the pre-flop action will tell you also if it looks like your opponent had a lower pair that could have hit a set. Without a read, i push to a re-raise here almost every time with anything TT or higher.

youre chasing a 3 outer on the flop and a 6 outer on the turn...not exactly a 'good percentage of the time.' it shouldnt be that hard to muck an overpair. if you feel youre behind, throw it away, put in your money when youre ahead. not chasing with all your chips in the middle.
