    Default Open Folding

    Good day,

In the last few days I have encountered at least 3 players that oppted to FOLD rather than CHECK when it was their turn.

One guy kept doing it while under the gun.

I am sure this is not common and can't quite figure it out.
Is it a done so they don't get caught calling to many bad flops? no self control?

    Just thought it was wierd.
Why is it a penny for your thoughts but
you have to put your 2 cents in??

    Somebody's making a penny!!

I think they called to see a flop with rags and folded when they missed. Basically they didn't want to show thier rags had it been checked down.

When I multi-table I sometimes open-fold the flop when I see it's going no where and I don't want to have to give that table any more attention.

Especialy if you just got AA on another table. Yeah, this makes the most sense.

just click 'fold to any bet'. open folding is not really a mistake in some cases but you never know what cards might come.

i think open folding is sometimes considered bad ettiquete also, because it impacts the actions of the others to act in the hand differently than check/folding. i seem to remember hearing that mostly with limit though.

sometimes when i limp rags for straights and miss, i'll check-out

I sometimes fold on the river if I was drawing and didnt hit.
Usually pot has to be multiway, I dont wanna show my
cards for free. Multiway pots its 95% that somebody has
a pair or higher card than me.

    playing myself back to even
I find myself reaching for the fold button when I am or am about to start tilting. It's a sign that I've lost the patience to bother checking a hand down, and if i catch myself doing it, I immediately start closing tables and take a break. Also as another poster mentioned, suddenly coming into a big decision on another table will prompt an open fold as well.

heh, I remember about a week or two ago I was playing in a hand where it was a 3 way raised pot. Action went something like villain open raised, SB called, i call in the BB. I forgot all the details but it's probably about a $50 pot. Checks through on flop and turn. River comes, I have some bullshit hand that can beat complete trash (ace high, 22, etc), but not much else. I forget what it was.

SB open folds the river, I check, villain makes a large bet, I say a few things I shouldn't and fold. Bleh.

I always thought it is a way for some people to not get themselve into trouble.

Similiar to the blinds: over the long run many players lose money in the blinds, not only because you have to put in money in with marginal hands, but because you might make more mistakes because you get into difficult situations easier. How often have you completed as the SB, just to flop middle pair?

Could be the same with folding when you could check. Maybe they have something that they know will get them in trouble, so they just fold it right now.

    that's terrible

anything that you can get yourself into trouble with actually has value. meaning you are throwing away EV because you're retarded self can't make folds when people bet.

I'm not open folding, just saying what I think is the reason for people to do it

I had someone do this today on the flop, heads up after limping with me in the BB. I asked him why he did it. His response was "You know why...." I asked him again and he just made out I was silly for not knowing.

Maybe open folding is a highly profitable strategy that we're all missing out on.

The most important thing to come out of this is that you shouldn't say anything. Let the guy open fold, more money for you...

I open fold for pure game theory and meta game reasons.

Hello. My name is Magnetic Skull and I am an open folder.
It started about 2 years ago. Everyone was checking and as a protest to their obvious lack of cards, I folded. Since then I have become addicted...

I do it to confuse good players and conserve mental resources.

Why think too hard about a crap hand when I can rest and move on to the next one?
Especially live, it really seems to upset people's concentration...Works really well on "table captains" or solid, otherwise unshakeable players (especially "math" players).

Look at all the time you folks took to talk about it...
That in itself makes it worthwhile. Best way I could possibly spend my 2 7 off (barring a miracle flop).

But seriously I only do it like 1/50 BB hands. Or sometimes If I make a steal attempt that gets obviously(?) caught by a slowplaying monster.
Or when the board four flushes and it's still a multiway pot and I don't have a suited card...

Flame if you must. Long term, I think it's +EV. (for me)
Part of what passes for table discipline.
There is no such thing as free checking...

Long term, it is absolutely, undeniably -EV. (for anyone with half a brain)

When I am ten-tabling, I openfold sometimes on the turn in protected pots when I am likely to be playing the board (e.g. 4 high no pair no draw) on most river cards.
