Check pre-flop, 88 doesn't hit overpair very often, so the chance you're wanting to continue post-flop is small (1:8 to hit set, basically).

You can go ahead and take a stab at the flop, but recognize that for what it is - a bluff. You don't have a good hand, and really don't have many outs to make a good hand...2 outs, in fact.

Turn play is about the worst you can do. He called you on the flop, which usually means he has something, and the turn card was neither a scare nor did it help you. Either fire off a second bluff or check/fold.

In general, at penny stakes, bluffing isn't worth it.
Up my bankroll - buy Saints Row.

It seems to me that you got caught between hving a decent made hand and trying to bluff, and that the combination of the two made it worth being the aggressor.

However, you made the wrongs move, really - I don't have a problem with the pre-flop raise followed by repping the flop (you'll want to rep with a more than 1/2-pot sized bet though), but once you get smoothcalled here you have to assume you're down. So when the turn doesn't help you, check-folding is the only real option.

It's all too easy to get caught up in being the aggressor and seeing it through to the end ("well, I decided pre-flop that this would be my tactics, and I also have second pair, so let's take it all the way"), but the fact that the guy you're trying to bully isn't getting phased - and also the fact that he is short-stacked and therefore will have better pot odds to call your all-in than if he had the same stack as you - is a very strong indication that he's almost certainly up, with top pair or a set of threes most likely.

The most important thing to take away from this hand is that you got lucky and will probably lose 90% of the time if the same circumstances aries again. There's a slight caveat here in that micro-limit players often take anything to showdown - but that should be an added incentive for you to be the person who milks them, rather than just being one of them.

Be careful with med PP's ESP when you miss your set.
