Noob question

I read recently online that UTG is the worst position to be in. Why is this if the small blind is the first to make a move after the flop?

Becuase you dont get to see any of the action preflop before you make your descision.

Another advantage that the small blind has is that since you have already committed a portion of a bet to the pot, you are getting better odds on your money if you choose to continue in the hand.

Think about it this way. If everytime someone puts in a 6BB raise your computer automatically calls 5BB of it for you then you only have to call 1BB left of the raise if you want to continue with the hand.
Are you getting better odds? sure
Are you going to lose shedloads of $$$ folding on the flop? You bet.

If you have a decent hand like 78s then you are getting better odds to call but if you have a crappy hand like 23o then you are being forced to call half of it anyway and then fold without even seeing a flop.
Id rather have odds made of lots of opponents limping than me force limping.

I wasn't suggesting that he should just bleed his chips away. Tight poker is still winning poker, regardless of the position. Still, in the small-blind, it is often correct to open up your game slightly.

In that case i read it slightly wrong.

I still think its worth posting though.

Too many begginers complete the small blind with any pretty much any 2 cards (or at least any 2 "with a chance of winning") like A6o or 72s or whatever.

I find that if you call in the SB with 2 suited then you are bet out on a 2 suited flop without being given odds to draw to the flush even at 5NLand the many people i see limping A6 etc. are often beaten by limped AJ/A9.
