    Default New to FTR

A friend recommended FTR to me so I decided to make a name to try and take my game to the next level. Any advice for getting started on the site? I have been playing on pokerstars for about a year and consider myself a mediocre player, but I want to change that. Any help would be appreciated.

    Welcome!!

Start of by reading our strategy digest, etc. Surf around, post some hand histories, make a few comments. Have fun. Don't be an asshole...we already have that position filled and queued.

And for the love of God, stay out of the commune if you want to get better at poker.

The site is sometimes described as tough love. We don't mind tearing you down if you're wrong. It could also be described as "We help those who help themselves". Becoming good at poker takes a lot of effort, especially in independent study. These are not things that someone else can do for you.

The place to begin is the Poker Strategy section. Watch the Poker Videos. Read the Beginner's Digest. Play some poker making sure you save hand histories, then post some hand histories of situations that confuse you and explain what you thought at each decision point, justify your decisions and get roundly derided and laughed at. Oh and hopefully pointed in the right direction also.

LAG= Loose Aggressive- plays a lot of hands both raised and unraised, you never really know what they are going to show up with. This is a very difficult style to pull off effectively but it can be very profitable.

TAG= Tight Aggressive. What should should hope to play like.

Nit= Tight passive. Plays few hands and folds basically unless they have a very good hand or the nuts.

Calling Station= Loose passive. Plays a lot of hands and will call usually when they hit any piece of the flop. Dont be one of these, although they can be difficult to play against because they don't raise when they have a good hand. Don't bluff these people.

That should be enough to get you started.

    What stakes?
Take a look at Bankroll Management. Read the articles. Watch the microstakes videos, join IRC (there should be a sticky in the BC), post a couple of hands and stats if you use a tracker.
