Whoever sold you a system with vista and 1 GB of ram is not a vendor you should return to, skimping on RAM is the oldest scam in the book because you'll be back in 1 year to buy something that actually works. RAM is so cheap compared to the value added it may as well be free.

No, you cannot use really use HD space for RAM. I think you can get fancy and move HD space to the swap something but it isn't as good as RAM anyway. Before you mess around with re allocating anything just buy RAM
