    Default MoP study group

Not sure if it's been done already, but would anyone fancy doing a book group / study group on Mathematics of Poker. I've just got the book and would benefit from having people to read and discuss it with. Would majorly help with my motivation and commitment too.

    Any interest?

Good Idea, I'm not sure exactly how a study group works but nonetheless I am interested!

here's a link to the theory and practice study group to give you an idea of a potential format:

I got the book recently and have not started it yet, so yes, I am interested. I have a mathematical background, so I can try to give a hand if some people have problems with the math. However, my schedule is hectic, so I can't guarantee that I can chip in on a regular basis or keep up with the reading plan at all times. Will try my best though.

Wonder if Spoon would like to help also at times. I know he loves the book.

Yeah Spoon helping/leading would be awesome.

Had a flick through it today, I don't think the math is that complicated for anyone who has at least done A-level maths (that's for brits, no idea what the equivelent is for yanks). I've covered most of it doing an econ degree but that finished 5 years ago so will be well rusty and don't think I'd be in any position to lead. Kind of hoping for someone with a far greater level of maths and poker to lead the way I guess.

Sounds to me that we have got a few mathematically able people here already, I reckon between us we can soldier on through. I would quite like to take this discussion onto the IRC as it is a bit more of a dynamic approach. Perhaps posting updates on discussions on here pasted from the IRC. We could set a weekly meeting time? I am also supposed to be good at maths so should be able to contribute.

why not study a more helpful book for microfish like NLHE T and P? This is like running before crawling imo.

not sure, syudying has its merits as well.

Anyhow, I've bought the book and am about a quarter done... been busy. I'll contribute to the thread when possible.

Is there much to take from ToP for people who have already read NL T&P and only play NLHE?

I concur that MoP requires a strong mathematical background and that people who don't have one would probably waste their time trying to read that.

However, if it would lead them to commit suicide, then they'd better give up poker NOW, because they're probably going to jump out the window next time their aces get cracked.

Ive been reading a couple of chapters and my guess is that if we do this study group thing, some people will just say "fuck it, too much math" somewhere along the way. IMO, lets do it and see where it goes. Since you suggested it DanAronG, it might be a good idea for you to be the "leader" of this. Im willing to help with whatever´s needed.

Some people? Only 4 people mentioned an interest.

Well I'll be hitting it next week either way. Will come back to this thread after I've read a chunk.

I've read Math of Poker a couple of times. It's pretty cool, basically poker-themed game theory at the level of Calculus 1 with some fancy operator notation thrown in. It didn't help my poker game at all, but maybe that's just me.

I totally agree with Spoon about studying The Theory of Poker. This book will help anyone's game because it explains the concepts and logic behind all poker actions.

    edit:
If anyone wants to start a ToP study thread, maybe after you're done with MoP, I'll definitely join.

I don`t know the book MoP
but seen the reaction of spoon I deffitnely think we should fisrt do ToP and when that`s finished we can do MoP for the die hards

I`ll join them both if they come in that order

I'd be interested if a study group does start.
