Default How to put on a range?

    Hey everyone,

As you can see I'm new here - I've been playing poker for a while but finally came to the realization that I'm pretty terrible and want to improve my game. I've been reading through posts/hands/articles/training etc, and have started to try some of these methods out, playing tight and then trying to put my opponents on ranges and acting accordingly.

I'm struggling with some of this though: I try to put someone on a range, but when I get into tough spots, I simply don't have enough time to figure out the full range in the middle of a hand, let alone go and calculate my equity. Instead I just think to myself something along the lines of - "oh, there's a good chance he has a flush" when a third club hits on the river (maybe after the villain limped and then c/c-ed small bets on the flop and turn with a draw on the board).

I am curious as to how other people began learning to do this - are there any strategies/tricks that you found particularly helpful? Any previous threads on this? FWIW, I've been playing at 10NL tables.

    Thanks...

You need to start your range assigning preflop, every single hand you play.

I kid you not- EVERY SINGLE FUCKING HAND

and it needs to be done street by street, thats why you won't have a basically impossible task on the river of putting together all the pieces of a range within like 30secs or w/e

I like to go through hands with pokerstove after play adjusting villain's range after each decision he makes. I'm not good at it yet but I think it helps. It's really interesting, alot of times my equity is way off from what i thought, and usually I have a really good idea of what villain could have by showdown. It's also important to subdivide villain's range into sub-ranges that he plays differently, that helps us to pick the right line against him.

Also, check out these Galfond articles, especially 'G Bucks' and 'Wait, Weight.'

You're already headed in the right direction. Knowing he could be on a fd is part of it. Expanding that range with a range you gave him pre is part of it too.

You'll almost never have time to figure an accurate range and figure equity at the table so praticing with a range tool like pokerstove will help. Running different scenarios thru stove over and over again will make it more second nature when you're at the table.

also, you would be benefitted by reading and attempting to do spoonitnow's exercises which (i think) are in the beginner's circle digest.
