    Default How do you know...

How do you know when a player catches a set? I lost a huge chunk of my bankroll because I couldn't read it...

    Dealt to me: A 10
    I bet 2BB and get 2 callers
    Flop: A,10,6
I check thinking I have the best hand so I could slowplay it. Player 1 raises 4BB. I call, Player 2 folds.
    Turn: A,10,6,K
    I bet 10BB. Player 1 calls.
    River: A,10,6,K,3
    I go all-in. He calls
    Flips over Pocket 10s...

reraise him on the flop see how strong his hand is. The king on the turn is a scare card to me and i play it cautious from there out and I definetly dont go all in with just 2 pair on that board. A reraise on the flop would have told you alot more than a smooth call. You're behind to AK, QJ, AA, KK, TT and 66 and he showed strength on the flop but its still hard to tell. 2pair to a set is one of the hands you get paid on in hold em usually I just rebuy and say nice hand.

Some hands you're just losing your stack on. This is one of them.

Calling the flop raise then betting the turn here is a weird line.

Well suppose I reraised and he called... What would you do then?

Now suppose I reraised and he reraised.. Would you really put down top two pair?

If you were in his position... What would be your thinking?

I'm no expert, but two pair is still just two pair. calling down 10BB dosn't look like a chase. i probably would have shut down... checked on the river, fold to a raise, raise on an improved hand. but i've lost quite a bit by betting the second best hand again and again and again.

At this point in my game i'm probably over cautious of turn card calls and raises, but it sure seems like 85% of them are because the villian has something pretty good. i think you did ok, trips are just hard to read.

if I reraise and he calls, i check/call down as long as the bet he makes on the turn river isnt too big. If i reraise and get reraised back I think about laying down but if the reraise isnt that big I call and see the turn, with that turn card and a big bet I most definetly lay it down.

If I put out that 10BB raise and got called quickly, I would be thinking that I was against Big Slick and the turn just made his 2-pair....particularly after the 4BB post flop raise...smells like A-K (TPTK) kind of play. After that turn and call I probably would have checked it to him on the river....if he pushed - I may have layed it down (really hard to say for sure-I was not there) if he small bet hoping you would come over the top - I would just call and paid him off.
Sticky situation - I have played it both ways...been burned....split...won - it is a little easier if you have some sort of feel for him, but people can and do switch gears. Just one of those situations you thought you had the best hand...then find out you didn't.....what can ya do.

Sets are almost impossible to read, so you takes your licks.

    That said,

I'd hesitate to slowplay top 2 unless it was AK. If any cards >T come, you're in danger of a higher 2P, not to mention broadways.

The K makes it very unwise to start betting. His call makes it extremely unwise to go all in.

To get in his shoes: I would not call your turn bet unless I could beat AK.

I assume you mean "bets' -- there was nothing to raise yet?
