    Default folding equity

    Hiya folks,

Am pretty new, I could use an expansion on this concept, I've no clue what it means. Please clue me in and tyia.

It means the chance you have of your opponents folding. If you are deciding whether or not to push a hand all in to steal the blinds, the more folding equity the better, because they have a higher chane of folding.

It is also the reason why continuation bets work. Even though you missed the flop, they might have hit and and fold anyway.

Lets say player 1 is the big blind and you are on the button. Everyone folds around to you and you push all in.

You have two ways to win this hand

    a) Player 1 calls and your cards hold up to win
    b) Player 1 thinks its not worth the gambool to call when he has no clue what you have and loads of his chips are at risk.

part b) is an example of folding equity working for you.

Equity if the percentage of the pot that you will win in the long run.

If you hand wins 50% of the time on the flop, you will win 50% of the pot of the flop in the long run. Now if your hand wins 50% of the time but you fold your opponent out 35% of the time Ontop of that, you will now win 85% of the pot in the long run. How fun is that?!

    Didn't get your math 'rilla.
If you win 50% of the times and get the opponent to fold 35% of the time you should win
    0.35+(0.65/2) = 72.5%

Yeah, that is the level of discussion we thrive for...

And I was under the impression that the beginner circle is the place where beginner players post questions and get smart and accurate answers, not the forum in which people insult each other, guess I am stupid.

TLR, relax. He was just being 'rilla, you know, a smart ass. And he wasnt being a smart ass to a newbie but to you, and you are definitely not a noob.

Rilla explained it good but his math sucks, hopefully he isnt making any important calculations when you are sending people to space :P

    Nice correction TLR.

    I'm just pressing the button.

And sorry TLR, that's just how I roll. "Whatever... you're stupid." means "I clearly was wrong."

A lot of these terms are just something that older players always utilized but never put into a scientific term. This is a perfect example.
Been playing money poker for 34 years and decided in 2002 to try that TX Holdem game on TV. Then found Pokerstars in Summer 2005. Still not an overall winner but i am on a good trend and nearly there.

    still a scary thought

    From the poker glossary:

The value that comes from the possibility that other players will fold when you make a bet.

For example: It is often better to make a bet than call a bet because betting has folding equity, whereas calling does not.

I will try to remember next time, no harm done...

Trust us, "you're stupid" from 'rilla really does mean, "My apologies, my math was off, clearly I was wrong".

You should only be offended (and rightfully so) if/when 'rilla says something like "You're right, I'm stupid". That would actually mean something like "You're stupid; I rule the universe, so bow down before me you moronic plebe" or some other variant of an actual, heart-felt insult.

And if he says "I wanna *#@! you like an animal", what he really means is he wouldn't even let his dog *#@! you.
It's not what's inside that counts. Have you seen what's inside?
Internal organs. And they're getting uglier by the minute.

    Actually, 0.35 + 0.65/2 = 67.5%
