another thing that has helped is thinking ahead to what might happen on the next street. If I have a piece of the flop, like middle pair, or top pair weak kicker, and theres either a lot of people in the pot, or one large raise to me I don't only consider whats happening right now. I contemplate whether I'll be able to call another big bet on the next street if my hand doesn't improve a lot, or if I'll be safe if another same suit comes or the 4th to the straight etc... If I don't think the next card will make my hand a comfortable favorite than I can just get out of the marginal situation right now.
I don't mean to sound so tight/passive, but in the lower stakes the pots are usually multiway, and the chances increase that someone is holding the junk cards that beat you, so knowing when to fold will save u a bunch
