    Default Critical skills?

Hi everyone, I'm looking to learn some poker for fun and profit. For the moment I will be playing small stakes, no-limit at Pokerstars. But looking for a starting point I noticed that the amount of knowledge to acquaire is quite large. So I thought of asking this questions to more experienced players:

In your experience, what are the three most critical skills to become a winning player?

Thanks in advance for the answers.

(BR management is more important than tilt control, because BR management will prevent major losses due to tilt)

Just degen play a couple hundred thousand hands over a few years and you'll be crushing the micros like me. And by crushing I mean breaking even. And by breaking even I mean as long as you have rakeback.

    Exclamation jeets Quandry....

jeet, fun and poker dont usually go hand in hand, if you're gonna play for fun don't bother. you may just become a silver star minnow just on the back of your deposit's, if that's ok by you then fine , give me your chip's. Having fun while your PLAYING WELL is where you're gonna succeed. as for the 3 essensial skills

    2. TAG play
    3. Position
    Hope this helps.

If I was you JEET, I'd find another forum, obviously intelligent lively discussion doesnt happen on this site, probably because alot of members lack the necessary vocabulary and mental capacity for such tasks. Whether to waste anymore time with these morons is a matter of self discipline, something you must learn too at the tables. Poker SHOULD be fun but very often is not, anyone who tells you different is lying or noob, and hasnt sat for hours and hours of hands most of which you are not gonna be involved in, but you still have to scrutinize for every last read you can get. trawling back thrugh your hands for the last month looking for leaks isnt much fun either but it's a necessary evil if you want to make money, doesnt sound like much fun now does it. Im not just being 'Glass 1/2 empty' this IS sound advice the best you've had in reply so far and IS the best you will get judging by all the other non-descript garbage (some) other members have posted. I do have fun playing poker or else I would'nt play as much as I do, but the most fun is when you're laying on a beach somewhere thinking, 'Thank-You very much for my Pina Colada DONKEYS'. and that, my friend, is a few years away yet for you, but very attainable if you put the hours, days and months in. this is Floppasetto signing off FOR GOOD from this site. To not let the b'stards grind you down, you just turn the grinder off! have a nice day

iunno, there are a few gems:

Samuel 24:24 "But the king said to Araunah, “No, but I will buy it from you for a price. I will not offer burnt offerings to the Lord my God that cost me nothing.”

Fish will always play draws without the right pot odds

Romans 1:29-32 "Though they know God's decree that those who practice such things deserve to die, they not only do them but give approval to those who practice them."

Hell has a special place for Rat-Holers

Ephesians 4:28 "Let the thief no longer steal"

    3Bet liberally from the Blinds

Acts 20:33-35 "You yourselves know that these hands ministered to my necessities and to those who were with me."

Everyone will get dealt AA with the same frequency

Timothy 6:10 "For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils."

It's hard to tell when the butthurt began, exactly. Maybe a lack of punctuation in Himalayan society makes the transition to a text-based forum community difficult.

Apparently, the OP was getting exactly the answers he asked for, from some of the most helpful posters on this forum.

This is about the time the Himalayan lady showed up (apparently already in need of a nice, cushy chair). The lady said poker isn't fun, and if you're having fun, you're doing it wrong... then called position a skill.

Then, 7 minutes later, instead of editing the prior post to explain why position is in itself a skill, the lady contradicted the notion that poker isn't fun when she told us that it's fun to laugh when she loses. (I assume she's laughing right now.)

Then jyms made a funny. I laughed.

Apparently, in the Himalayas, "fun" means something else entirely. The lady got moderately more butthurt at that moment, I think, and tried to bluff jyms off his line. This was poor timing on her part, 'cause jyms has the nuts.

In a wild move of desperation, the Himalayan lady decided to shove the river. This might have worked on another forum, but jyms saw through her line and knew that the story didn't make sense. EZ call, EZ game.

I wonder if the Himalayan lady will re-buy...

See, this is what happens when we start trying to draw new posters in. Let alone women. Wendy here is the new Crazzvette. I wonder if she is actually a woman. TITS OR GET THE FUCK OUT WENDY!!

Anybody with a brain has already settled in on a good site and either posts here or 2P2 and took a lot of shit on either site to learn the ropes becaue there was money to be made playing this game. If you weren't a member of these two sites 3, 4 or 5 fucking years ago and your taking up learning poker now you have to have zero intelligence anyway because the game is dead, so I have no idea why we would need them here. Isn't there a ton of freeroll forums that steal passwords for all these events, why waste time here trying to qualify?

    and oh ya

Wow, do you really think that games are that dead? I can't speak for American sites but lol if you had to be a member of the sites 3+ years ago to start playing now. I'm not saying it's not slightly harder, IDK, but the games are still really soft. Even low stakes cash games (like 25NL). And that's coming from a tournament player. If you don't think that there's money to be made for a new player starting now then maybe you're the one with zero intelligence? FWIW I wasn't a member of 2p2 until 2 years ago and I was just starting the game.

That said, who the fuck is this crazy woman and why is he annoying us with these posts. Please go away. 5* Bible quotes tho

I strongly disagree, jyms. not only with the sexism, but also with the cynicism.

I've been here less than a year, and I have been taking as much advantage of the articles, conversations, and advice as I can. I have built my initial deposit up to 5x what it originally was and am rolled, but not ready, to take shots at 25NL. All of this with no HUD and no rakeback.

    My point is:
The game is not dead. At least not at the levels I've played.

Also, FTR has a huge benefit over 2+2 in that it is a much smaller community and as such the dialogue is more consistent and the trolling is minimal (in the poker threads, at least).

EDIT: All communities need to bring in new personalities to keep it fresh and dynamic. Our tight-knit bunch here at FTR is not for everyone, and as such, we'll expect most new-comers to leave... but some great peeps will stay.

Funny as frogs MadMo, himalayan lady Re-Buy's:
    Noob player asks for advice,
Noob poster gives advice the best she can,
god gives judgement on noob poster's advice but will not digress in conversation with, be it because of his superior post count , or the fact that he lacks the social skills,
ether way, noob poster takes notice to this 1 time insult on the 1st day he has bothered to actually talk to strangers about his playing experiences, and decides to bother to ask for a response......
No explanation to the great one's insult is forthcoming, so....... there it is... talk poker or eff off....I can talk shite for Britain if ya wan't. in Latin if ya like,
if you have an opinion or disaggree with something somebody's posted, say so and digress, don't just throw little JPG.s like a tick-turd.

You are right though position is not a skill. knowing when to use it is tho. So if I were gonna replace position wiv something it would probably be......Big Tit's & nostrils.
No seriously......Probably a good knowledge of Pot odds, EV, stats, math ect
Its like Jeet 1st said 'the amount of knowledge required is large'
It's hard to narrow it down to just 3 skills or 3 top skills as they all complement each other and knowing them all and then implementing them in the heat of battle IS THE KEY.
A cetain Mr Brunson once said ' A Thousand lessons will not be enough for most players at NLHE' and He's right.
It's become a crap-shoot and I'll be very surprised to see any pro win any main event more than once in thier career now .
Most people Havent got what it takes to become a 'Pat' NLHE player. In fact I think the best advice I could give Jeet at the moment would be... learn Omaha...
Of course NLHE's fun, Playing card's has to be !! or else we would'nt do it, I think what I was trying to get across was ......Say when I win a tounrney or a real big hand Im not Overcome wiv Joy. its more of a sense of Achievement and Pride at having out-thought, out-played my opponent's. A kind of Dr EVIL Laugh, when I get lucky I laugh, when I get a suck out I laugh, that is where the FUN is in this game take it seriously OR just break even

This is what I have a problem with. Noob poster with ridiculous avatar comes in, posts a bunch of stupid smiley cards and tries to be cute, rambles on about poker not being fun and acts like it is some serious business instead of just giving advice like the 14 posts before her which by the way never had a single Smiley so why would any sane person think it's ok to post like that as a noob?

Well this is what the BC gets when it whines about being abused by the better poker players. At least with Zilla, M2M and bikes you got great advice, now you just get the abuse from me without all the poker incite.
