    Default Brain Training... ?

If you didn't already think I was mad...

Ok, so I go to grab a sandwich for lunch, decide on the panini and I know it has a 5 minute wait. I pick up my cell phone, open up Sudoku and finish one of them buggers in 5 mins just in time for my panini to be ready for me.

As I leave, I think to myself - what if? What if I had a Poker Math brain training game I could use for 5 mins while waiting for my panini, ten minutes in a bus or whatever.

A lot equity and pot odd calculations are very situation specific, but I'm wondering if it would be possible to define some types of exercises and make brain training type games with a Poker focus. I wonder if it's been done.

    So.. mad or ingenious?

I've actually been thinking about this myself, since I struggle with the math, something like...

You are UTG with 44, against totally random hands and players, what are your odds to win?

Or pot is 2000, you have 4000 chips, at a TAG table, your hole cards are 88, quickly name pot odds, implied odds, etc. etc. etc.

If you have a computer with you the possibilities are endless. Even without a computer there's still a ton of stuff you can do. Write down loads of hands and loads of ranges, and estimate your equity against that range. Look it up on PokerStove later, rinse & repeat daily. Also do it post flop.

This will help you a lot.

Maybe I'm missing something but I need to find out how to use pokerstove more effectively, I'm confused on the equity part and what to put. I'll search for some tips on here.

Monty I probs know where you're going wrong I made the same mistake for ages. To work out your equity against a range you need to click on the "player 1" button and then click on the preflop cards and select a range. I took forever to realise the player 1 thing wasn't just a marker for the table and was in fact a crucial button.

I think there is a kind of gap here too. We have some basic pot odds examples and some PokerStove uses and it's kind of hard to connect the dots when you're coming to it as a beginner. It's almost like you have to figure out for yourself what's what.

I was reading Irisheyes' operation recently and he made a couple of killer posts, which I'll link here for you.

If you can bear the weight of innumerable words here's also my own struggle with getting to terms with hand reading and PokerStove usage. It's not terribly readable I'm afraid.

I might spend a bit of time soon doing a write-up of beginner hand-reading and hand analysis. More to help myself get it right in my head really.

If you have an iphone it's just an internet application then...

The problem with this is chicks dig the iphone and they'll be jumping on you straight out of a tag commercial. You won't be able to concentrate.

nish pretty much just nailed it with that link. You can buy the whole package or each individual component (like just the quiz portion). I may use my last gift certificate for this. Thanks for the heads up.

Srsly though, this will keep me occupied whilst away from the computer. Thanks for the link.

Thanks for the link. At least I should get my money's worth out of my Iphone now and will make travelling with the subway much more educational.
