I just registered here at FTR. So hi everybody.

Other than that, in the three or so weeks I've been playing, I've managed to move up in rankings on the freeroll MTTs I enter. First I got knocked out after two hands (3000something), then 720th out of 5k, tonight 360th out of 3700. Sucks to not be ITM, but it does feel like im getting better, even though I stupidly went all in with ATo after the flop. D'oh.

Now to keep my head from getting too big. :P

Damn nice, I've had one straight flush so far, never the royal though. And I think it'd be hard to get paid off with the royal flush.

My accomplishment is fairly minor, but I'm happy with it:

• Added $50 to my 'Stars account on Friday of last week (first $ added ever).
• Cleared the bonus on Thursday
• Withdrew the original $50
• ...and have a bit over $50 left.

Now to play more SnGs (where I seem to do the best) when I'm both not tired and have time to play without distraction.

Oh: I tend to drink whatever's available when playing. I've learned that drinking a gallon of water at a sitting does not increase one's play if you won't sit out a hand or two and instead wait for a break to go pee.

I made $2 by finishing in 133rd place out of 5724 entrants in a $1000 freeroll on Royal Vegas!

Yahoo! I went way farther than I expected, only to get beaten by an A on the turn beating out my pocket 4s.

But I won something! First time ever!

Due to real life stuff screwing with me, I had to cash out yet again (did so yesterday). It is becoming annoying that this is hampering my poker development, but then again, if I didn't have this poker money, I'd be in a lot of trouble lol. So I cashed down to $160. That meant.. goodbye 20NL . So I had to grind it out at 10NL again, til I get back to $360, my personal BR requirement for 20NL. At first I had some small adjustment problems.. the lagg style that works at 20NL really isn't all that good at 10NL, but after a few hundreds hands I got back into how to play 10NL. And you know.. I really love 10NL. Lol. Dunno why. It's so relaxingly easy. But I do want to go back to 20NL ofcourse, as I want to move higher. $95 to go or something. I guess it's nice to know I'll always have good ol' 10NL to fall back on or something

Heh, you should post it anyway. Personal victories are what it's all about. I run at 30-40BB/100 not too rarely. But not always, sigh. After the 7 hours which netted me the previous results, I played 4 more hours and hit an incredible dry of cards where simply NOTHING ever went right. You know, you rarely get a hand at all.. fold fold fold.. and then when you do get a hand, either everyone fold or mr. nit just flopped a monster. At the end of this 4 hour horror, I tilted off a buy-in, then quit.




I hope I'll have better luck today! Oh and if you are wondering what this is doing in the "winning circle".. it's a personal victory of sorts that I ran break-even instead of donking off a ton of buy-ins on such a bad run.

On a more serious note, this was the catalyst I needed to justify dedicating this summer to really study and play poker, as opposed to taking my usual summer job.

Ok, so after cashing out $200 on saturday, I had to cash out $130 again yesterday. This brought my roll down to $130. Really sucks, but I had to, you know. Started today pretty sucky.. hit some harder tables, ran into KK vs AA, my "tilt situation" which indeed tilted me for a while (goodbye couple of buy-ins), but after these first 500 rough hands, it picked up over the next 500:



So the roll is moving up again, $212 now. Strange thing is though, I don't feel satisfied anymore. Not compared to the previous good run, where I was all happy about it. Hitting those harder tables earlier made me realize I actually suck at poker. You don't learn to play poker at 10NL. In fact, you unlearn it more than anything! When I run into aggressive players - rare at the lower limits ofcourse - it's suddenly a ton harder for me. That's why I suddenly just wanted to move up to 50NL asap. Ofcourse, not without the roll for it ($1k). I probably won't have to cash out for a couple weeks, so that's atleast comforting. But it's such a long way to go still.. sigh.. (I also read some of bdawg's posts in the shorthanded forum and they made me feel like I suck even more, for some reason)

So when I got the BR to $230, I got bored with 10NL. Like I said before, I feel it's numbing there. So yesterday I moved to 20NL. First 800 hands I kinda played uncomfortable and scared. Made like $20. Today (which started some 4 hours ago) it already went better, both in mentality (being relaxed and playing my game of raising crap etc) and results:



I've set my goal at $800, then it's time to move up to 50NL. $410 to go..

First time I've left a table three buyins up

Today I reached the 1000$ mark. Actually I probably have an extra 100$ lying around in neteller/pokerstars that should be in my roll, but I decided to start fresh at 500$ a few weeks ago and keep proper records of my bankroll.

Now I have the bankroll to play 50NL (although I cheated and started 50NL yesterday to get started with the Betfred bonus).

Hi,
I started playing NL about 2 week ago, and I really enjoy it. I started playing cash games about 3 or 4 days ago. Right now I have a bank roll of $20 down from $350. It's about what I expected, but I realize now the mistakes I was making were not what I thought. I finally understand what tilt is, and realize that even though I didn't think I was angry, I constantly gave up money after losing a few pots. Anyway, great site and I started playing 6 hand NL sit n go and have done fairly well today.
I've wone 1, 2nd once, lost 2. I've learning to leave tables after I'm up as well. I play on Party poker in the micro rooms, and now I leave a room whenever I am up, even if it is a negligable amount. It's really helping me learn when to quit.
Ok, I'm babbling so I'll stop writing in a moment. I know I have a lot to learn, I don't think that I have any skill (maybe a slight knack) for this game and I really need to practice and read to get better. I hav ADHD really bad so when I find something I am niterested I dive in as fast sa possible. I'm at the point in the freeroll tournaments where I usually finish at about the 50% mark of entrants, and I see that I really need to work on my patience. Now I'm done, I really like your site and look forward to learning much more about poker. I have one question if anyone can help me out. I'm sure it's been answereed but I'm lazy right now and want to get back to poker. Any reccommomendatons on sites that you can play for free with live people who actually care if they are playing well or not? I've read a few bad reviews of the free money play on party poker (the only site I use right now) and would like to find somewhere to practice against people. Excuse my Ramblings and thanks for this great site.

Playing freerolls isn't really a great benchmark to test your skill against. Don't get disheartened because you're busting out in them.

Playing with play money will get you nowhere. Noone takes it seriously. If your bankroll is that low, take it to Pokerstars or a different site where they have microstakes, as Party only has 25nl up after a while.

Thenk you very much for the advice. I know my biggest problem is that I love jumping into anything I find interest in. I'm using self-control a lot better. Here's how I did today:

managed to finish around 200 out of about 8000 in a free roll (I understand what you mentioned about not using it as a benchmark)

tilted on a $10 10 seat SNG
finished 1,2, and 4th in 3 6 seat $6 SNG's

I'm sticking to the .02 and .05 tables from now on. There are a lot more people with at least mediocre ability in the higher stabkes tables. Oh yeah, I've only been playing in the begginner tables as well, still have a weeks to use them.

My plan now is too read as much as I can, and practice implementing what I learn, before I go back to playing at higher stakes. I do enjoy playing the freerolls though, they are good for a laugh sometimes. Any reccommendations on free software to track my playing history? I read somewhere about a decent free program, just can't remember the name. What I found today is the freeroll tourney's help me learn patience, since they run for extended periods of time. I'm going to buy a book in the next few days as well.

so thanks again, and I'm happy to say my bankroll ($50 deposited yesterday) has gone up to 74 and has only dropped to 64 today. For me ths is better than usual. In no way do I think I understand this game well, and cannot wait to really start learning more.

Skreeter, you should be looking to play 10,000 plus hands at microlimits before moving up, and even then onlhy if your roll has grown sufficiently. I admire your attitude and your enthusaism, but you need to be absolutely sure you will have the vast reserves of patience and discipline poker unequivocally requires. Poker is played absolutely in the long term - a winnign hand or a winning session means NOTHING in the greater scheme of things.

Just now I played a couple of $25NL tables after nopt playing for 10 days. I lost $40, half of which was a hand where I had 88, hit middle set, managed to get all my oppo's money in by the river which gave him a set of queens and the pot. I patted myself on the back for my strong play and moved on to the next hand. If this doesn't make sense to you, you still have a lot to learn. If it does make sense to you, you still have a lot to learn. This is a game of experience - after 100,000 hands I consider myself a decent beginner.

Good luck with it all and remember, keep learning, listening, reading and experiencing and you might become a winning player. It may sounds patronising but it's god's honest truth.

Had an exceptionally good day two days ago, so i thought i'd share.

I mostly play $5+1 sit n go's but i decided to enter a $2 buy in tournament at partypoker. Not only did i make my first final table appearance, but i CAME FIRST!!! $226 yeah!

I've been playing online for about a month now, and everything i've learnt has been from flopturnriver, and i feel like i'm getting there slowly.

keep up the good work guys, and i'll let you know if i achieve my next goal. I've got a bet with my girlfriend....if i turn $50 into $1000 in 30 days, she performs unspeakable acts on me!! so far it's 5 days, $50 is $369, and i'm feeling good!

Congratulations to all who have gone before, my achievement is pretty modest but I won my first sit and go last night, a $6 buy in on PP! Was nearly out twice but came storming back, I really enjoy the tournament format. Made up a bit for losing 2 buyins at my first attempt at ring play. Even though I had done some reading and thinking and know about starting hands and position, I play horribly post flop. I can protect my top pair from being drawn on or draw myself if the pot odds are favourable but second pair? 2 overs? I don't have a clue what to do haha and I'm hopeless at putting people on hands. This is $25nl on PP and I think it's too much for me at the moment, I guess trying another site with micro stakes would be better for me? Anyway thanks to everyone on this site who has offered their advice, it's helped me a lot!

Thanks for the advice, I just can't help myself but jump into something I find interesting as fast as possible. I've calmed down a lot, and have a few books on the way. I find playing in the MTT tournaments, even the freerolls, really helps me learn patience. I managed to finish around 40th in a $1 tourney today on party poker. I'm not just dumping money into these sites like I did when I first started playing. I'll update when I start to actually learn something.

Hit 2k today. Even though I'm now officially rolled for 100NL, I'm gonna stay at 50NL as I only have booked 3000 hands there. I'm probably withdrawing some cash from the roll, as very much of it has been from bonuses/referrals and not from "real play". I believe that my roll will grow sufficiently from play alone before I feel ready to move up.

Still, it feels really good to hit the 2k mark .

(p.s. I don't suppose any sites with TV tables actually let people know if/when their games might be broadcast, do they? I'm sure with global TV schedules they don't, but I'd love to hear how commentators rate my play )

All those commentators are terrible. They give the worst advice ever on those programs.

Irish, the sng I won was on Poker Syndicate (Boss network), though I did once before play $50NL on Prima which was a TV table (and 8-handed, oddly).

There's a chap who commentates on Poker Night Live with longish, curly greying hair - Mark someone? - who I saw the other night beating Dave "twatfish would be a better nickname" Ulliott in a 7-hour HU match, He seems pretty decent.

I've only been playing for three days (NL $25).

After 720 hands I'm running at 10.42 BB/Hour and am up two buyings (plus a bonus $20 from party and free PO2).

Time seems to be my limiting factor given I have a full time job and a girlfriend (you know what I mean).

just got back to back wins on the $6+.50 45 person turbo, $77.50 a pop $155 total, most money ive made in a night not being on my knees

3/405 in a $1 MTT on Prima

$44, my biggest cash yet.

Finished 3/108 in the $1 rebuy tournament later today for $35. That was my second third place finish today.
My roll went from $136 to $208 today.

On July 1, 2006 I got 2nd place out of 1800 in a MTT.
And one week before that was my first Final Table. I was out in 7th. Ironicly also in a field of 1800!
But... My first ITM was 4 months ago. Although I think that this was more luck then skill. Not to mention there were 36 payouts and my chip stack landed me in 35!!!.

Well, this isn't much, but I am currently on a 7 SNG ITM roll, with 3 straight 1st place finishes. I've finished ITM 8 out of the past 9 and 11 out of the past 14. I like it.

Ah, felt great, was like my first tournament ever, played the FTR gauntlet tonight, figured if I was going start, might as well get a trial by fire.

Broke the 3k bankroll mark today. Also I started dabbling in 100NL. I think I'm going to move up even though I have some very obvious flaws in my game.

This is weak and sad compared to most of you, but it's a milestone of sorts for me. Last night I doubled my initial $250 deposit to $519 through a combination of Bonus whoring and playing just slightly better than break-even poker... Only took me 3 months... baby steps, right?

3 more months, and I've managed to double the BR again playing 25NL, pay myself back for my initial $250, PokerTracker and PokerAceHUD purchases. Playing with $1053 of other people's money is a good feeling Wish I had time to play more hands, though.

This is all over the past 4 months starting at $5NL with free money (from instantbankroll) and minimal poker experience. However, I did read a lot of books, and tend to be more mathematically inclined. I'd like to especially thank FTR (beginners forum and short-hand).
