    Default Be professional, be patient

I recently experienced a moment of weakness and committed one of the BR management cardinal sins. I played higher than what I was rolled for, and I did it out of lack of patience. In case you find yourself tempted to do the same I want to share an idea taken from a chapter in Steven Pressfield's 'The War of Art'.

He explains that our enthusiasm can work against us. We often "plunge into a project with an overambitious and unrealistic timetable for its completion.... We will hit the wall. We will crash." Part of the problem in my particular case was trying to grind out a sign-up bonus at a stake that would require tons of volume at the stake I was playing.

He goes on to say, "The professional understands delayed gratification. He is the tortoise, not the hare." Some of these stories that circulate about players quickly rocketing through the stakes can seduce us into thinking we can pull off a big score without pain or persistence. "The professional arms himself with patience to keep himself from flaming out in his work. He knows that any task takes twice as long and costs twice as much as he thinks. He accepts that. He recognizes it as reality.... He prepares his mind for the long haul."

    Something to keep in mind.

This sounds pretty spot on. Grinding for a bonus can make you play when your tired, Longer sessions, and even playing hands you normally wouldn't. Last night i needed about 20 FPP to earn a $ 10 bonus. I got the bonus but lost $ 6 in the process b/c i was tired and should have stopped. So i made a mental note to not even check on the bonus status. I will let it just be a nice little surprise when i reach it.

I think I'll check that book out. I need to follow that advice in more than just poker.

I highly recommend it. It's a good, quick read and applicable to just about anything.
