bankroll question

    Default bankroll question

I was wondering if theres anything wrong with moving up and down gradually in no limit texas hold em. For example, playing until I reach 15 times max sit of a particular no limit amount, well use .50-$1 for our example, so I would need to increase bankroll to $1500.00 until I sit at a .50-$1 table, and then not moving up again until I reach 15 times the next limit which would mean not moving up until my roll increases to $3000 and playing $1-2, or moving down from .50-$1 once my bankroll decreases to only 14 times max sit and playing .25-.50 with 1400. Basically, Im wondering how many winning or losing sessions does a player need in order to say ok, its time to move up, or down in limits. Also, help me out with whats a proper bankroll for no limit heads up. In exactly 20 games at $5.25 I have doubled my $50 bankroll to $100.00. Thanks guys

Ok. If you are a beginner which I am assuming you are, if I were you I would not move up or down until I had played a significant number of hands, regardless of the money you've made. The system you describe for when to move up, say playing at a certain level when you have 15 buy-ins, is good. However, I would stay at a given buy-in A. until you hit the dollar amount required to move up and B. also until you play maybe 10000+ hands at that level. I also would recommend waiting until you have 20 buy-ins per level rather than 15, and I would recommend starting at 25nl (or lower), regardless of your starting bankroll.

When it comes to moving down, if you have 20 buy-ins at a given level, I think moving down once you only have 15 left is probably a good time.

As far as playing heads up, I don't really know. heads up can be very swingy. I don't really know a good bankroll to have for playing heads up, i'd say probably double what you'd have otherwise. So, 30-40 buy-ins.

Ok thank you for your reply, I was just basically tryin to ask if it was better to already have stacked money to allow yourself to go through a swing and NOT HAVE to move down or have enough to just tip toe in that limit and move up or down according to what your bankroll is doing. In other words beginning to play .50-$1 with 15 max sits ($1500) and moving down once I lose one buy in, or would it be better to wait until I have say 20 max sits ($2000) and not have to move down until I lose 6 buy ins. The only problem with the last theory is it wont be gradual moves. In other words, If im not good enough to play at that limit ill be losing $600 instead of only $100 before I make the move down in limits. Get what im saying. Also, when I added up I have made $50 in 20 hu sngs games something didnt add up, so I went back and figured out what it was. I have played 2 four player $5.25 hu sng's for $20 wins which means I won an extra $5 on both of those wins. So I actually have 12 wins and 6 losses for the single elimination and 4 wins and no losses (undefeated) in the 4 player hu sng matches making me overall in opponents 16-6 beating 72% of all opponents with a net profit of $55.00 even. Do I move up or am I just getting lucky? Thanks again

ah ok, i get your first question now. I would not move up and down around one single point like you say. I'd make it so, say you hit 2000, you move up to 100NL, then if you went below 1700, you'd go back to 50nL. A one buy-in swing isn't enough. 5 may be too much. 2-3 is probably fine.

As far as the heads up stuff, its very likely that you can easily beat that level, but you've hardly played any heads up sng's yet. its really too early to know. I would only move up if it was well well within your bankroll. Otherwise, play a bunch more of those before moving up.

one of the points of bankrolling is not only for a safety net, but it's also to indicate to you how good you are. If you feel like you are dominating the stakes you are at currently AND you have ~15-20 buyins for the next level then I say move up right away, because you can always move back down if you find your skill level isnt up to par with the next stakes.

I also think 5 buyins is a good swing aproximation. If you lose more than 5 buyins playing a conservative game you might have gotten really unlucky, but more than likely you arent quite ready to play at those stakes yet.
