As played I valuebet the river because if he called the flop with something like 88-JJ after you check the turn he's probably not going to want to believe you. I'd expect an ace or backdoor flush to try to get some value on the river cuz it looks like you've given up trying to put money in yourself. Obv check the river if it was a blank.

If you want to get villain off their hand, I think float and bet turn > raise as if you have a hand and then have to follow through into a bigger pot on the turn >>>> minraise.

Like you said, you need a gameplan. Even if you see a flop and think there's an opportunity to take a pot away, think past the initial action. What else are you potentially going to have to do to win this pot?
