    Default Tipping dealers

I can't believe the infantile whining I'm reading from people who don't want to tip. Just how self-absorbed are you people? What's with this the-tips-cut-into-my-profits bull and the I-don't-want-to-do-it-just-because-it's-expected garbage?

Lemme tell you something. You want to be a lone wolf, you go out to the wilderness where you belong, with the rest of the animals. You want to live among civilized people, you conform, you adapt to their presence and you meet their expectations if you want them to meet yours.

Life among the civilized is an even exchange between equals. You want to make it all about you? Stay home--you won't be missed. Else, tip for crying out loud. And, while you're at it, grow up.

Lonnie did you ever have someone at the table that gave you more toke then the pot was worth? Ive seen it happen, but well i know the guy he plays 5-10 and 10-20 online so what does he care if he gives the dealer 40 bucks for a 36 dollar pot ?

Lonnie hasn't posted on this site since Mon, 22 Sep 2008, 9:28pm, so it might take a while for him to get back to you

But, to get back on topic since I haven't chimed in on it in several years. I still have basically the same stance I had then. I am not thrilled about tipping - it's tough enough to beat the game, the players, the rake, and I prefer not to voluntarily give away any more $ than I have to, but I have reached a compromise for now. I tip nothing for small pots, a big blind for medium pots, and two big blinds for big pots.

There is a podcast from either Cash Plays with Bart Hanson or Deuce Plays with Bart Hanson where he has a long dialogue about tipping. I think his thoughts on the topic were similar to mine. You have to be careful with your tipping - it adds up quickly and can SERIOUSLY cut into your win rate if you tip too much. Now, he plays medium to higher stakes games like 5/10 and 10/20, so maybe as you get higher, you have to consider the topic of tipping more so than at the lower levels, but the general concept remains the same. If your goal is to make money, unless you're crushing, you don't really don't have a ton of chips to tip with and still be a winner.

I always tip by the way even when the hand does not get to the flop. If win a pot i will give the dealer a buck, if i win a big pot (200 and over) possibly 5 bucks.

    I am Queens Blvd.
That's how winners play; we convince the other guy he's making all the right moves.

You win because your opponents muck postflop?

    2. If one or more players are tipping out $20 or 50 to the dealers (1/2 NL tables) as they leave, is it expected that all players will?

    3. Is it considered universally rude to leave a table after winning a big hand?

    4. Is it customary to announce "I'm going to be leaving at such-and-such time" or "after one more orbit" etc?

    Thanks!
Leave when you want. If your winning big and want to announce one more orbit that works too.

@BooG, i just read this whole thread picturing the characters from reservoir dogs holding the convo. i live in australia where dealers are paid (reasonably) well and tipping them is illegal. i tip waitresses though if i ever order anything from them.

lol the cardroom I'm visiting now has an unwritten rule to announce "last 3 hands" before you can leave. And your last hand better be on the big blind too! More annoying is that one of the dealers, who i find rather unprofessional, sometimes make a comment if somebody leaves with a big win without announcing "last 3". The fish go nuts anyway when a big winner leaves the table - they think their "prize" is leaving!

anyway back on topic, i tend to tip between .50 and 3 depending on the size of the pot. if you feel the rake the house charges is reasonable, i think you can afford to tip dealers...

i sometimes tilt when i see people rat-holing, mostly online, because they are usually terrible players. if they are repeat offenders that is. the kind of people that consider poker from such a short term perspective that they leave the table after they double up to "protect their winnings" or whatever. if they knew anything about the game, they'd probably have an edge. and if they had an edge, they'd want to be deep, and wouldn't want to leave. i wouldnt say its a moral shortcoming or hold it against them, it just tilts me because i want the chance to win their money.

yes, it happens often that you sit down mainly to sit to the left of one particular player, only to have him repeatedly stack people with K5, J3, T2... and then leave.
