From what I've pieced together, I think the chief was the only cop in the room when the shots were fired, and the guy dropped the gun immediately after realizing they were cops, possibly before anyone else entered the room.

Wow, you would think the cop would have got off a few rounds after being shot at. Homeowner very lucky his favor wasn't returned.
