Just felt a small earthquake, or the results of a large one. It was a 5.2 but probably 250 miles away...it was how I'd imagine a jello bath would feel.

Yea the epicenter was like 50 miles from my family, and Facebook pretty much exploded over it. I heard it was caused by Oklahoma State fans breathing a collective sigh of relief after last night, but I'm sure there aren't nearly enough of them in existence for that to happen.

How is it that Russians make such excellent chess players but awful poker players? It deeply confuses me.

I dunno, poker is a game of probability, pot odds, implied odds and range assignment. One who is good at chess should be able to master these skills better than someone incapable of applying logic. Chess is a thinker's game, so too is poker, at least at higher levels. The only difference as far as I'm concerned is chess is not a gambler's game, whereas poker clearly is, especially at lower level poker, where unfortunately I reside.

It's the mix up of the stimulus/work/reward thing. Chess doesn't tell your brain that bad decisions are good and good decisions are bad, but poker does |

At first I was just moaning because a Russian bust me out of a tourney with K9s, but I do find it strange that they're so good at one thinking game and so bad at another. I know I'm just generalising, and I also realise I'm playing low stakes donkey poker, but we all know Russians are generally who we want to see at the table, whatever level we're at.

show a pic of your abs form the front and the side standing naturally. If your doing weighted work you could be developing more muscle than you want. It could be fat or it could be that your actually developing muscle and they are getting bigger or some combination of the two. You may also have a more defined curve to your lower spine making it look like it protrudes. If your losing the six pack fat is definitely a problem.

I have the same issue as I have rather large abs; I'd have to be obese to no longer have a four pack, but a six pack only comes after a ton of dieting. That's just the spot most men keep their subcutaneous fat. That 'slightly pregnant look' is really just fat, but it is accentuated due to muscle size. I also consider ab muscle size to be purely genetic and not about spot training because you get a ton of ab work just from normal stuff like squats and even bench press. Their primary function is stability so they naturally grow when used that way, and if you look, you'll see athletes who never do ab specific stuff still having huge abs |

Ya, as an honest opinion your still in the range of what we call "skinny fat" and are about 15-18% BF. Abs come in at around 12-10% for most people. You need to focus on a little more upper body muscle, to change your chest, waist and hip proportions more than trim your waist and BF%. You also have quite a pronounced forward tilt to the pelvis causing your low back to arch and abs to push forward. Just look at your waist band and low back

I'd say at this point, work on gaining muscle, but also yeah eat well. Actually, always eat well. If you eat well yet still high calorie you may put on fat but still feel much better; fat isn't always a negative, but not eating nutritionally is |

Ok, ty. Given that I'm a very poor student and can only afford dumbbells, can I get some decent legs/ab work done with just squats and dumbbell deadlifts in my routine? Also by the looks of it is the curvature of my back purely down to spinal curvature and no posture issues? |

You can get plenty with just dumbbells. In fact, with something like squats, you don't even need to use weights to get relatively big. It's not like if you do 200 bodyweight squats a day, your legs are magically going to still be small |

I've never done straight-leg deadlifts before, but I think I should start doing them because my hamstrings are way too weak in relation to the rest of my legs. Do I lock my knees for these, or do I have just a slight bend in my legs?
11-26-2011 11:10 AM
#7340

You have a slight bend to protect the knees but lock them, they should never move so that all the movement comes from the hip. Keep your eyes up and the natural curve in your low back by retracting your scapula (shoulders back) while bending.
