God this rap album is so sick. I haven't listened to it in awhile and I started listening again and all the beats are sick and Prodigy actually raps well, its a miracle considering how bad his verses have been on most of his featurings and his new stuff. Havoc is an ill producer.

Yeah, agreed sick cd. Survival of the Fittest is probably my favorite rap song. Shook Ones II, Eye For an Eye, Give Up the Goods, and Drink Away the Pain are up there too.

Even though I've given up on rap music. I still consider "The Infamous" as one of the most influential rap albums of all time. Brought NY rap back to the forefront away from all that Gangsta crap in the 90's. Then rap went South both figuratively and literally. It's all pretty much crap nowadays. No where near as creative as the early days.

Albums like that are far and few between.

Not to me. I fucking hated Gansta Rap and all the fake ass posers that came after NWA hit it big. The rap game was flooded with Compton knock offs and the like. The Public was pretty much force fed West Coast rap for the better portion of the late 80's to mid 90's. For whatever reason the West was the supposed home of "Hardcore" rappers while the East Coast was perceived as more "Cerebral" or "Artistic", which translates to soft in my book.

Mobb Deep, Biggie, Wu Tang, etc... let people know things were still just as hardcore over here in the East when they dropped in the mid 90's. So call my statement terrrible or whatever you want. People took notice, and that's when the whole East vs. West thing started to blow up as to which coast was reppin' the hardest. In hind sight it's all horse shit to me now. Any place in the world has it's bad areas.

The best decision I ever made in my life was to stop listening to rap for the most part.

Well then read my reply again. Prior to Gangsta Rap and the rise of West Coast. The East Coast and more specifically NYC was the defacto home of rap. And most rapping was either on a party vibe or a hustling vibe, with MC battles thrown in between. And even the guys talking about hustling and making dough were no where near preaching the level of violence the West Coast brought to the table. There was always that fine line before N.W.A. and Easy E.

Either way, some where along the line while for a bit, the East Coast attained the image of having more socially conscious music being produced (Native Tongues anyone?). And Cali just had the guns and bitches blazing every verse, some Cali rappers mixed in some thought provoking content, but for the most part it was all violence and hoes. But the thing that made it all go good for the West Coast was that the Suburbanites were eating the shit up whole hog. And after a bit, the image was that unless it was from California, it wasn't Gangsta, and therefore not hard enough.

So as I stated, Mobb Deep, Biggie, Wu Tang, Etc. reminded the rest of the country that NYC was still and always had been just as hardcore as the West Coast. Which seemed to work cause that's when the whole East vs. West thing blew up. And however you believe it went down. Two of the most talented and influential artists lost their lives over it. I never meant to imply that Mobb weren't saying a similar message, but come on. There is a distinct difference between the "Colors" wearing gangsta rappers of Cali and the "Hoods and Tim's" rappers coming out of NYC back in the day. Jesus, I think the last East Coast rapper to rock a Jehri Curl was Curtis Blow waaaaaaaaaaaay back in the day. So I was just stating that NYC made a comeback and it was musically and lyrically better than the West Coast product at the time for myself and many others here on the East Coast. Then white America discover Southern Bass/ Krunk and fled to the South, lol. And Raps been worse for it ever since. Hence my defection from the genre.

Mind you, I'm 36 and have/ had listened to rap ever since the "Rapper's Delight" and "The Message". So I feel pretty confident in how I compare the two styles then, and the crap they call rap nowadays.

I guess I see what youre saying, but I still dont really feel you have a strong overall point. I think it was good that the west blew up so that the east realized it wasnt a given that they would be the mecca unless they put in the work. For the same reason the southern blow up is good too. And not only for those reasons; while a lot of crap as come out of all regions, theres been a lot of quality as well. NWA, Outkast, Ice Cube, Dre, Ludacris, Clipse, ect. Its just like rock nroll benefitted greatly from the british invasion. Change is good.

I agree wholeheartedly with that exact statement right there. Maybe I wasn't as elaborate with my initial response. That's what I was really getting at. Those guys came out realizing that the only way to put the NYC back on scene was to put out a product that was just as good as what the West was doing. And what these guys did was to take the emphasis off what set a person was reppin, and put more stock into their hood and the lifestyle choices one must make coming from these hoods. Same thing as the West, minus the colors and gang signs. And for me personally, the beats, and lyrical flow from the east is more my style.
