I assume you mean OCD and I assume you mean people claiming they have it when they actually don't. No you don't have OCD because you always change the tv volume to even numbers ("lol omg I'm soooo OCD!!!").

My least favourite one is everyone claiming they're bipolar because they have a short temper. You're most likely not bipolar, you're just an adult that never grew out of temper tantrums.

No, I'm talking about ODD. It's 1000 times worse than OCD on the this is bullshit scale.

A short temper? Hell, I've heard people self-diagnose bipolar simply because they are sometimes happy and other times sad.

I'm sure it's all the more prevalent in countries where there are pharma ads. They all go something like, "Do you sometimes {have trouble falling asleep at night, feel unhappy, feel tired in the morning [yes, this one literally exists], have trouble focusing, etc}? You might have a serious, life-threatening condition called {insert rare condition here}. Ask your doctor about {xanax, adderall, ambien, etc}."

    My vote is OngBonga.

I'm glad you feel that way. I'm very happy to ruin your bullshit threads.

Do you sometimes feel butthurt? You might have a serious, life-threatening condition called sand in your vagina. Ask your doctor about getting a pap smear.

    I'm butthurt now.

    From the article's second paragraph:

In all these cases, school officials found the children to be in violation of the school’s zero-tolerance policies for firearms ... .
Not to nitpick semantics or anything, but I have my doubts that chewing the corners of a poptart a certain way immediately imbues it with the ability to fire projectiles at a fatal or, heck, even injurious speed.

I agree completely, and that's why it's ridiculous for them to issue disciplinary action.

I'd join in the redneck ranting about the pussification of modern society and how everything is overly baby-proofed for young boys etc, but it's just so cliche now

I'm not really sure what the point of the article is, so I'm not really sure if I agree or disagree with it. I agree that they shouldn't have suspended those boys and tug of peace is a bit of a silly name, but ... now what?

She flaunts the number 1% to show how insignificant the problem we're preventing is, yet simultaneously gives nothing but anecdotal evidence of the new problem it's causing. Maybe the number of people capable of perpetrating Columbine or Sandy Hook are outliers, but on the other side of the equation, we have 3 poptart-related suspensions--can we just right those off as outliers as well? Surely they just happened to be the 3 most ridiculous news clippings she found in the national press.

We're left to take her word for it that these stories are a sign of a much bigger, more prevalent problem (I guess, boys being prevented from being boys, whatever that means), but if we use her same exact logic for the other side of the equation, then I'm sure we could find the 3 most ridiculous news clippings of schools letting kids get away with too much antisocial behavior before they act, which is its own sign of a much bigger, more prevalent problem.

I don't know what these stories would be or if they even exist; I'm just saying that if the calm and rational reaction to the 1% cases of potential catastrophe is to ignore, then the calm and rational reaction to 3 boys in all of America being moderately inconvenienced is to laugh at it.

None of this is to say that I disagree with her point (whatever it is); I'm just saying the article feels so empty. It's like a placeholder filled in with talking points; the other side's put down for being built on the very same grounds her own (weak and mostly implicit) argument is built upon.

What's your endgame here 'viva? Are you hoping that spoon will respond to your walls of text with reasonable, well-thought out discourse, or are you trying to subtly highlight his inability or unwillingness to have a conversation?

Anyway, I'm perfectly willing to believe that boys are more misunderstood than girls in their early schooling years and this might lead to some problems. The one sentence that I felt might have a little bit of meat to its bone was:

Nearly half of teachers stopped or redirected boys’ dramatic play daily or several times a week — whereas less than a third reported stopping or redirecting girls’ dramatic play weekly.

That could be unpackaged a bit more. If I had to the guess (and the wording of the sentence obfuscates the facts so much that I DO have to guess), then it seems that there was a question of whether they discipline boys Never, Monthly, Weekly, or Daily (something like that), and 50% of the teachers answered that they did so at least weekly versus 33% for girls (I realize she said "less than" a third, but she also said "nearly" half, which I'm assuming equate to the same thing; isn't editorialized language fun?). I don't know if that shocks my pants off, but it's something. Then, of course, some amount responded to doing it more than weekly for boys, but I'm going to make a grand assumption that some amount also responded to doing it more than weekly for girls, too, but she didn't choose to include that, much less put it in italics. I'm sure if the number of respondents to report daily reprimands of girls were actually zero, then she would have included it in bold-type 25-point font. Unless the exact numbers are listed, I'm having trouble gauging how shocked I need to be.

Again, though, as my rantings on how much our education discourages imagination--and as I've admitted that the specific qualities discouraged are disportionately male qualities--I'm damned close to agreeing with her title right from the get-go. Maybe I'll wade through the Esquire one ... no, actually, probably not. I'll keep looking.

I think this is a really interesting discussion. Maybe it's run its course though.

If it's come to me pointing out how 1,000-word webpieces from the Times are contentless, then that's probably a good sign that the answer to that is yes, it has run its course. But I trusted SIN's sincerity that that particular article touched on something he actually cared about, so I thought the trail was worth sniffing.
