Default Operation - Stay at home dad

Ok, I love reading all the "Operation" posts so I decided to start one myself. I have been fortunate enough to start working part time starting this month at my full time job. Its a run of the mill 40 hour a week job, but I am only going to work 3 days a week and play poker 8 hours a day 2 days a week while keeping up with the little one.

    Vitals:
    - Roll currently at $275
    - Currently playing 10NL at UB
    - Been playing seriously for a few months
    - Getting rake back through Rakebrain
    - Using PokerTracker and Poker Ace HUD

    Short term goals:
    - Get my roll to $500 so I can move up to 25NL
    - Play 10k hands at 10NL
    - Play > 1500 hands a day

    Stretch goals:
    - Move up to 100NL (build bank roll to ~2500)

    2/2/07 Notes:
    - Roll started at $211
    - Played 8 hours
    - Played 2189 hands of 10NL
    - Had to work 45 mins (real job)
    - Cleared $20 in bonus
    - Roll ended at $263 including bonus money - Up 3 buy-ins
    - I have to say that it was a pretty good session. I only took one bad beat when I flopped a set of Aces, went AI and got busted by a flush. I didn't know how I would respond mentally and physically to a marathon session, but I felt good and never really lost concentration till the end of the day, all in all a positive start. The highlight would have to be stacking someone on a straight flush

    2/3/07 Notes:
    - Roll started at $263
    - Played 401 hands
    - Played 1 hr 15 mins
    - Cleared $3.64 in bonus
    - Roll ended at $275
    - I woke up in the morning and played a bit before the little one and the wife woke up. I consider Saturday a partial work day. Another good start to the day.

My goal for this "Operation" post is to keep track of my progress. I welcome feedback from you guys as I believe the FTR posters are some of the most supportive and intelligent poker people around. I will post some hand histories as they come up. I don't really have any questionable ones yet.

Thanks for reading and good luck to all.

I think the hardest part is going to be plugging those first couple 8 hour sessions. Of course, always better than "your run of the mill" job, at least when you're winning . Good luck with the operation.

    Default 2/5/07

I woke up this morning at 5:00 am CST. The rib went to work out so I hopped online and started UB up. Much to my surprise they only had one 10NL table and it was full so I regretfully decided to punch up two 25NL tables. Let me first start by saying I wasn't really comfortable when I started. $50 is a lot of my roll. Well, in 30 mins I proceeded to donk off ten bucks. WOO HOO! I am never doing that again until I am ready and feel comfortable. There is nothing worst than playing scared poker.

After that debacle, I went and worked out then came home and started 4 tabling 10NL. On one of the tables the guy to my left kept repeatedly rerasing my c-bets. I didn't have much on him except that he was 50/x/x after about 50 hands. Anyhow, this really started annoying me and I went on donktilt. I proceeded to lose a buy in to him with AQ to his pair of 4s. I can't get the hand converter to work but basically I went ape donk tilt post flop and he called me down. NEVER AGAIN!

    Here are today's stats:
    - Roll started at $275.56
    - Played 7.5 hours
    - Played 1861 hands of 10NL
    - Cleared $18 in bonus
    - Roll ended at $301.11
    - Made a mean pot of beef stew for dinner
    - I have to remember to remain calm during the down swings or when I fell people are trying to take advantage of me. At this level, I need to just let the cards play themselves and move on. No more "I'll show him!" mentality.
    - I started out really slow but ended pretty good. If it weren't for the 25NL fiasco and donktilt I had a pretty respectable day.

    Till next time!

wow, good luck. I can't believe you went part time with a $275 BR?
    keep us updated.

wow i'm impressed you could play for 8 hours only playing 4 tables. i played for 4 hours straight with 10 tables once and i about lost my mind. i really didn't like playing for more than 2-3 hours per session, or more than 5-6 hours per day.

sounds like you have some good bankroll management and dedication, great! good luck to ya!

its probably even more impressive that he is doing it at 10nl... i think i would kill myself if i did that.

and more impressive still is that he is taking care of the little one. i have two kids myself, and it is almost impossible to do anything but run around - much less play poker - when i've got them alone.

how do you do it? how old is your "little one"?

    good luck to you.

hope it goes well for u, keep us updated. remember top stay within ur BR and STEP DOWN IF U R STRUGLLING AFTER MOVING UP

Dude, thought I'd drop you a line. I 4tabled 6max $10NL for about 5 hours tonight and thought of you. 2100 hands later and down 1/2 buyin I about hate myself. Thankgod for bonus and rakeback making it a +2.5 buyin night!

Good luck man, check out 6max sometime will ya?
  10. #10
Thanks for all the well wishing, I appreciate it.

As for my micro roll, I figure if I'm not able to build it up to where I need it to be then I don't need to be doing this. I've been given 6 months to prove my worth or its back to the grind.

My son is 14 months. I play in the morning when hes sleeping. When he wakes up we horse around a bit then I take him to a sitter. During a normal work day I would pick him up late in the evening, but with me staying home its allowing me to pick him up much much earlier. So, in short I'm not really playing poker when hes home but its allowing me to spend more time with him.

you my man is the epitome of patience and virility... 8 hrs. @ $10NL would drive me straight to the Psych Ward... i look forward to reading ur progression...

This is one of (if not the) the smartest things I've ever seen a new poster say. I really hope this works out for you!

And you know, if you find that it doesn't and poker isn't for you, find something else that does. Your time is too valueable to be trading it for appx 100,000 hours of your life just for money. I have yet to have kids but by the time that I do I want to be able to be a "stay at home dad" and watch them grow up. If you don't want to do the grind, there are other ways, ideas, and options you can pursue. You just need to be looking and want it bad enough.

I know you've all been anticipating my next entry so here it is!

I woke up today around 5am CST. As usual the rib went to work out. I played one 10NL table for about 45 mins. I never realized how boring it is to play one table at a time. Lots of sitting around picking my nose.

I got back from the gym and started playing around 9am, 4 tabling this time. Talk about an up and down day. Generally my profit graph is pretty linear, no huge ups and downs. However today was a wild ride. I lost 2 buy ins before I finally ended up a buy in. I know you guys hate to hear this but I had 4 terrible beats where I got my money in with the best of it either preflop or on the flop and got sucked out on. Oh well, its poker right?! I played a couple big pots that brought me back afloat where I think I made the wrong call, but Ill let you guys decide:

Hand 1: I think I played this like a passive nit. No Reads.

    Here are today's stats:
    - Roll started at $301.15
    - Played 6 hours 45 minutes
    - Played 1723 hands of 10NL
    - Cleared $17.31 bonus (I find it lame that my bonus is more than my winnings )
    - Roll ended at $330.34
    - While it isn't great its going in the right direction. Two things I would like to accomplish before I move up to 25NL are increasing my bankroll as I said before, which I am doing and turning my tight passive stats in the right direction. I play way to passively. Get a good laugh in, my stats are 16/5/2.

Tonight is Ruth's Chris baby! Take care and good luck.

P.S. Thanks to bigspenda73 for helping me on the hand converter.

When a guy tighter than me reraises me AI I become suspicious. At that point, I put him on TT or 55 but I had stars in my eyes and couldn't put it down. I sucked out on him when the 5 hit on the river. He wound up having TT.

Well today was vastly underwhelming. I managed to lose two buyins.

It was one of those days were cards weren't hitting and when I would hit a set it would be in an unraised pot, so no payoff. When you are trying to play ABC poker I guess thats what happens. I managed to stack off once when I flopped a straight and villian hit his flush on the river. The only thing that managed to help my bankroll was bonus, thank goodness for that.

Did I play this bad? Should I have pushed the turn?

Played like crap today. This is twice in a row now. Not pleased.

    Here are today's stats:
    - Roll started at $330.30
    - Played 7 hours 30 minutes
    - Played 2252 hands of 10NL
    - Cleared 18.53 in Bonus
    - Roll ended at 351.36. Yes that is correct. I made $2.53 today. I could have sat outside and sold lemonade for more probably. At least it wasn't a losing session.

I butchered so many big hands today it was pitiful. However I did learn a few things today:
    1) Never ever slow play (at this level at least) it will bite you in the nuts.
    2) Turn off the sound when playing. It is annoying to no end to hear that freaking beeping going off all the time when its your turn to act. I swear it made me rush at least two big decisions today, both of which ended in unfavorably for me.
  26. #26
Keep grinding it out man. Hey, you still made over 2 buyins today including bonus. Nothing wrong with that at all. Another week like that and you'll be rolled for $25NL. Take advantage of the bonuses now because they become relatively less as the stakes grow. Keep learning and keep reviewing your hands.

Any time you want to send me some hand histories PM me and i'll give you my email.

Played very sparingly over the weekend. Got a run of good cards and got paid off.

    Here are the stats:
    - Roll started at $351.36
    - Played 2 hours
    - Played 396 hands of 10NL
    - Cleared 4.50 in bonus
    - Roll ended at $377.46

Looks like your roll has only grown $100 since you started the thread. However, by my accounts you have collected ~$95 in bonus. Your goal here is to get to $100nl as soon as possible.

I don't want to keep saying it but $10 FR probably isn't the best money maker and certainly isn't the best bonus clearer either. $10NL 6max is such a cakewalk man. I am by no means a good NL player yet and it took me 1 week to take my roll from $140 to $500 playing $10nl 6max. Just look into it is all I am suggesting.

At lower levels your opponents mistakes become more exploitable due to the increase in time spent in pots with them.

More hands against weaker opponents. You are playing weaker opponents, AMIRITE?

More hands = More bonus cleared

Less players per table, so out of 100 hands you get the button 100/6=17 times instead of 100/10 = 10 times

    Man I make little sense.

6max hold'em is all about exploitation. Why? Because you have a smaller field of opponents and therefore are forced into situations with them more often than you would be at full ring. On top of this one does not need nut/near nut hands to win pots. I would first start 2tabling 6max to get a feel for the speed of the game. You could run nitty like 15/10 and be EXTREMELY profitable at $10NL up to $50NL.

Full ring $10NL is a rockfest as documented by many players on this site in the past. 6max also helps to improve one's postflop game because he/she is invariably in more pots than full ring. Take a shot at 6max, you'll clear you bonus at a 150% faster rate as well as gain more experience through more hands.

    Default Update

Sorry its been so long since I've had an update. I went on a 6buy in down swing recently which really made me question my poker playing ability, so I haven't been very motivated to update. Its actually quite embarrassing to to get owned so bad on 10NL. I've managed to turn things around the last few weeks and I'm up 3 buy ins. Lately my sessions have been roller coasters...losing a buy in within the first hour then winning a few buy ins to be up 1 or so. I've noticed UB has been full of rocks lately and its been hard to find optimal tables, so I've had to loosen my play up which has actually been somewhat successful for me. I've started raising and calling raises with suited connectors in LP and re raising flush and str8 draws. My roll is somewhere in the low 400s and I have 200+ in bonus to clear. Once I've cleared it, im going to try FT. Here's to being more active with the updates
  38. #38
Move to $25nl and don't drop down to $10nl until your roll hits $250. You have the chance to get out of $10NL....DO IT NOW!
  39. #39
Well I took spenda's advice and moved up to 25NL. The play here is just as poor only with larger stakes. Seems like everyone is happy to stack off, which is good for me I'm up a buyin and a half over the few sessions I've played. My roll has finally creeped above the $500 mark and I'm not looking back.

Should I have made this call? villain is 14/3/2 after 90 hands. I know my river bet was weak.

Ive got ~170 left to clear at UB then I'm jumping to FT. UB changed their rakeback structure to the contributed method...suck it UB.

Since march ive played 5400 hands and im +5 buy ins. If I can continue at this rate, by the time I clear all my bonus I should be @ 50NL when I start full tilt.

How terrible is this? I think I need to raise the flop on my draw. I put villain on missed overs.

Yeah, raise the flop. Why the turn c/r? Ok as a bluff I guess, but he's giving you odds to draw so I just call. As played I fold to the turn push, I can't imagine he'd do that without a big hand.

I had an interesting session tonight. I normally play during the day where the people are tighter but night time is full of LAGs. To my detriment usually, I raise and c/c unknowns thinking they don't have it. Calling down with middle pair, tpwk is lame. I felt like I needed to beat myself tonight. In about 15 mins I was down 2 buy ins. Well I stuck it out and got some reads and managed to get back to even. I'm actually kind of proud of myself for not mailing it in after losing $$$ so quickly. I thought to myself you are playing like dog mess, thats why you are losing money, so I stopped donking around and straightend up.

    Played 350 hands up a buy in..roll @ 660

March has been a decent month for me up 6 buy ins @25NL. I look for April to push me close to the 1K mark assuming no bad runs.

Some things I'm learning along the way (most of you sharks know this but this nit is still learning):
    - Position = good
    - Position + Aggression = better
    - Instacheckers, for the most part they have nothing. Knowing this I take a 5 count before I decide to check...keeps em guessing
    - Daytime players are tight, Nighttime players like to gamboooool
    - Reraising PF sends a powerful message, Ive started to do this with AJs+
    - Grinding @ 10NL sucks, if you can afford it deposit to at least 25NL if you can.

Zook - I agree on your assessment, terrible all the way around. Thanks for the input.

    Default 4/7/07 Update

Ok, since the beginning of april I'm down a buy-in and a half at full ring...suck. I really didn't feel like playing today so I decided to see what all the hub hub was about on 6max. WOW, what have I been missing. 6max is SO much more fun than FR. I used to 4 table FR but since I decided that the hands come faster I would 2 table. I played ~1k hands and I'm up a buy-in.

I don't think I'm ever going to go back to FR. I tried to do it once today and it was like running in molasses.

I actually dropped over a buy-in when I first started thinking getting adjusted, but I'm glad it was a +$ session. Money not withstanding it was much more enjoyable in general. People like to gamboooooool alot more and there are less rocks.

My roll is @ 690 now. Here are some of the big winners and losers of the day:

Dude, please please don't open limp Ax in 6max. Im folding A7o in the CO but it's usually dependent on the players behind me.

    Default 5/22/07 Update

Sorry its been so long since an update (for anyone who actually reads this). I went in the tank in April and was very unmotivated/ashamed to update. I lost 10 buyins in April. In a 3 day span I lost all the profit I had for the month and was down 140. May has been a good month so far and now I'm back in the green. For May, I'm up 10 buy ins and almost back to my pre April downswing. I'll try to update this regularly now.

My roll stands at 910 so hopefully after another few sessions, I'll be able to hit up 50NL.

    Default Revamping my game

Ok, time for a little self reflection.....

I have to be one of the world NL players around! After 17k hands of 6 max 25NL I am in the red, yes in the red. I know you guys probably don't care but I've got to get out here.

My stats through my suckfest are 20/8.5/1.5. I am a weak tight poon. There is no possible way I can ever move up playing so nitty and terrible. I've decided to start over so to speak and retool my game. I'm obviously loosing tons of $ getting blown off of hands playing scared and not using position to my advantage.

Today I'm dropping down to 10NL and for the next 15k hands or so I'm going to try and get my pfr% up around 15. I'm going to try and use a raise or fold mentality. Obviously, I'm not going to raise every hand I play but if I'm going to open, its going to be for a raise. I am also going to loosen up my 3-bet range slightly. Probably the weakest part of my game is the turn. People always say post flop play and specifically the turn is where the money is made. I am going to make a conscious effort to fire another barrel on the turn. I am also going to try and maximize my relative position. Right now I do too much calling and not enough raising.

When I initially started this, I thought by 6 months I would be able to gauge my worth as a poker player. Well, I'm not going to settle for sucking. I don't need to be the greatest high stakes baller or anything, but geez I'm a smart dude, I should be able to at least get to 100 or 200 NL and hold my own. I've given myself to the end of the year to get this thing on track. I'll have to make some kind of decision as to what I'm going to do because we've got another baby on the way and I'll be damned if my now supportive wife is going to let me sit on my can and watch the wind blow all day. I've got to have the feeling like I contribute something to my family besides cooking and cleaning.

As of the end of the day today I've dropped about 40 at 25NL over a small sample size. I'm going to try and not be monetarily results driven and focus on improving my overall game. Today I'm playing at 20/14/3.5 so even though I've lost money I consider this a step in a positive direction.

    Rant over.
  55. #55
I would be more concerned about your AF than your PFR% at those stakes. These guys play all sorts of hands so limping from position and smoking them post flop would be more beneficial. anything in the 22-16 vp$p / 20-10pfr range is ok but get that aggression to 3++
