I'm a racist

According to my best friend, roommate and who happens to be black.

During a recent conversation with him, we talked about dating. I brought up that I would never date a black girl. Too me, this is just a personal preference.

He went into a rage, calling me a racist. And that if we asked anyone they would say that I'm a racist for thinking like that. He also challenged me to do just that. I declined the offer. I'm not gonna asks friends/people this when he is around, because I think I would get a lot of bias answers.

I believe that I'm allowed to chose my partners, whatever race it is, and that it comes down to personal preference and not racism. But what do you guys believe?

well, it's kind of crazy that you are convinced that you know everything about black girls to exclude them from your dating pool from the get go. being more attracted to white blonde girls is another thing. saying "i'll never ever date x" is another.

Well... if you make the blanket statement "I wouldn't fuck a girl if she's black" then yeah that's kinda racist. If you say something like "I'd fuck a black chick if she's cute, but fact is I don't find that many black chicks attractive" then you have grounds to say it's a personal preference thing. I don't find all that many black chicks attractive. But that doesn't mean to say I wouldn't date a black girl. Some are cute, and also cute isn't the only important criterion when deciding if I want to date someone. Maybe she's not particularly attractive but fucking funny. Well, I'll give it a go if she's keen.

I always think that I tend to find white women on average to be more attractive, however maybe this is just me being racist as I see loads more white people day to day and I wouldn't sleep with a lot of them, so with a smaller sample size maybe is the real reason.

I don't see how you can say you wouldn't date a black girl though.

It's for a variety of issues that include what you're used to, who you know, the sort of things you like

There are a lot of really hot black girls, but most non-black people only know a few black people total, so they tend to forget that.

It really depends. I think "never" hurts your case. I am half black and I've never dated a black girl, and if I were honest in ranking ethnicities by who I've been attracted to, Sub-Saharan African would certainly not be at the top. I don't know why this is-- the Freudian may point out that my mother is white, but I tend to think that's ultra simplistic. But having an aversion so strong that you would literally never consider dating a black woman is something. I am curious though, is it only dating? Would you have sex with a black woman? If you'd consider them fit for sex, but not suitable for a relationship, based on race, that's pretty telling. Of course these things are nuanced, and you could not be racist, but turn down the hypothetical relationship due to social pressures.

Anyways, I think that while you may not be racist, if you said what you said without tact, or if your friend is quick to kneejerk reactions, or a combination of the two, I can understand how this could blow up. It would probably help if you actually figured out where your preferences stem from, and then try to explain in a reasoned way why you feel the way you do. If he can't come to terms with the fact that people do have racial preferences in their attraction to the opposite sex, and that these preferences aren't necessarily steep in racism, then he's just being overly PC.

Oh, and btw, homosexuality is a sexual orientation, being attracted to a person of a different race is not a sexual orientation. Don't conflate the two and hope to absolve yourself of being a bigot, you're only digging yourself deeper by doing so.

This. I realise that my wording is terrible when I say that 'I would never'. I would, but she would have to almost a perfect match and in a different league than me. If we were talking about norwegians/whites/asians etc I'm much more open to flaws in personality, looks etc.

The reason I said 'never' is simply because I don't see myself ending up with a black partner in this lifetime. I just can't see it. I'm 99.99999% sure that I won't. However, I agree, I can't say that it will never happen. It's stupid to say that.

How much is this is actually conscious choice? Do people have any control over physical features that they find attractive in other humans? Why is preferring pale skinned women to dark skinned women any different to preferring men to women?

This is totally normal and his reaction is one of typical racism-phobia. This exist heavily within black people and within the global mindset. I'm not trying to dismiss their feelings about this as irrational btw. They are enforced in thinking this way through the media and other social relations. When you say something bad about black people, to them it feels like you are insulting them too.

Just switch black with something else and how would he react. "I don't date spanish/italian women. They always seemed very warm-blooded and emotional to me. I don't know but this just never appealed to me. I prefer women like here in norway that are more laid back."

This all essentially boils down to how stupid it is to try and characterize everyone of a certain race or nationality into a stereotypical group. Although it is quite funny how doing exactly that was a very important evolutionary trait.

I would be more inclined to fuck black girls than to date them. Black girls don't turn me on that much, I watch porn every day, but never with black girls. Don't get me wrong, I get turned on by all hot girls, regardless of ethnicity. But if you take a average looking asian girl and a average looking black girl my choice is really easy.

I see myself ending up with a average looking girl. This might help influence me in not choosing a black girl.

Some things are hardwired and others are picked up after you are born based on your experiences. The features like a deep jaw line and narrow eyes (manly) or nicely curved bodies (very feminin) are the ones we instinctively look for without having to learn about it from experience.

As for the learning aspect, in general how our mind works is that we take the average of all the faces we have seen in our lifetime, and use that as a reference point. People who we find the most attractive are the ones who 1. are closest to the average of all the faces you have seen (this may sounds backwards but google it if you aren't familiar with this concept) 2. have a good amount of male/female features.

A widely recognized consequence of looking for familiar faces is that it is very difficult to differentiate for example asians people when you never see them much. From an asian person's perspective, the same holds true if they just sparingly see whites. It's an effect of the media propagating multi-cultural images of people that are white, black, asian and everything else. It expands your mental database and reference frame.

I don't particularly like black women in porn. Well, afro-carribean anyway. I don't mind me a bit of Muslim porn though, so long as there's no men in it.

You watch porn every day? That's something. I'm single, I have a high sex drive, but I don't watch porn daily. I only watch porn when I can't be bothered to think about my hot female friends. My imagination turns me on a lot more than some random slut flicking her bean.

I agree with the general consensus that while you may not be racist, your phrasing sucks and you prolly deserved heat for it.

Generally I find that physical appearance matters less and less the more you get to know someone. Like, you meet an average girl and get talking, then you find out she's kinda cool and you have a lot of the same interests, so you hang out and she makes you laugh and then you realise she's got a great smile / eyes / whatevs but you're only noticing it now because she's grown on you, that sort of thing.

Now substitute 'average' for 'black'. You saying it could never happen?

Luco summed up how it works most of the time. I see no reason why a particular race would fall outside that without some kind of racial stereotyping at the very least. Saying that in general you don't dig black chicks would be ok imo, but still likely to offend. You are certainly insensitive to race issues. I don't know if that makes you racist.

I think to say you'd never date a black woman is kind of racist but to state that black women aren't really your cup of tea is fine. Semantics, sure, but the words matter. The fact is though that there are things about black women that one might find unattractive, like frizzy hair. Similarly I don't generally find German women attractive because they are all like 5'11" behemoths. Races simply have different gene patterns and it is not racist to recognize that.

All that said I think you'd have a better time in life if you'd just see the beauty in all women, as corny as it sounds. I want to fuck like 90% of the 300 women I see over the course of the average day and I think that's pretty healthy. I'm in Thailand though.

Sorry for the misunderstanding. The point I was trying to quickly make is that he wouldn't have been called a racist if he wouldn't have told a black guy that he wouldn't ever date a black girl. One of those "if a tree falls in the woods" type situations.

As for the actually not wanting to date black girls, I don't see that any different from any other preference (fat, skinny, Asian, long hair, whatever). Nobody has a right to tell a guy what preferences he should or shouldn't have when it comes to women.

Oh I see your point. I mean yeah, that's true. If someone doesn't do anything racist (whatever that means - join the KKK, openly discriminate against someone, etc.) but holds racist beliefs, that wouldn't be obvious if they never expressed it. I think if you're truly a racist though, it'll come out in your behavior or language at some point or another.

I think the sentiment of "never" wanting to date anyone of another race is rooted in racism, but I don't know if I'd call him a racist for it. But it would also depend on why he would never want to date them. If it's sexual attraction, then I think that speaks to a broader issue of how we are conditioned to view beauty from a young age, and how the Western white woman has become this idealized aesthetic. But if his reason was something like "They're all loud and obnoxious" then I would call him a racist. It seems pretty clear though that it's the former.

Is this racist? Perhaps. You are not giving a chance of any kind of relationship to some random girl because of her skin color. Solely because of that. But I believe it's a little bit more nuanced than that, so you should probably get a pass.

I personally am not into the way many black women are built. I mean I'm all for women who are in shape, but some black chicks have bodybuilder's physiques and aren't even remotely athletic. I think my subconscious reads it as unfeminine, so I'm put off on a really base level.
