Well I made it through the first winter and then on the last day of that shit, this huge ass motherfucker came and killed me.
After some research, it was apparently Deerclops.
I should probably have some darts of some sort ready next time.

Generally speaking, I think it's better to run than fight. Leaving Deerclops to his own may result in your base camp being destroyed. Everything can be rebuilt. It's OK. He's so likely to kill you if you try to stop him, that you're better off just running away.
He will chase you, but slowly... so you can lure him away from your camp... for a bit. In my experience, he always comes back.
He'll despawn on the first day of summer as long as he's not on the screen (or nearly so)
Frankly, if you kill Deerclops on your first try, without using a wiki or anything for tips, then you are a masta of Don't Starve. Deerclops hits extremely hard, wrecks your sanity just being near him, has massive health, etc.
I said in a previous post that the item dropped by Deerclops isn't used in any recipes, but there is now a recipe that uses Deerclops Eye. Unfortunately, it also uses another boss drop, and is pretty tough to make.
DO I need to pay for the game or can you play it for free?
I don't want to buy it because realistically I've only got a week or so where I'll be able to play it.
I don't think it's free... they're still releasing new updates to the game every few weeks.
They also have a kick-starter going right now.
You'll have to decide for yourself what's the right price, but you'll easily get $15 worth of entertainment out of the game in a week's time (I paid $15 months ago, and I think I heard it's on sale, now, for even cheaper: $8 or even $5?). Compare it to a few beers at the pub, or a movie ticket... etc. It's a deal for the entertainment value.
It's not on sale. I've been waiting since I saw it posted at $5. But it's full price
Think it was on sale for the Steam Christmas sale so you might have to wait a while for it to be on sale again
Well I just really don't have any type of projectile weapons at all, so that's kind of a problem. I'm pretty sure that it would be pretty easy to off him if I had enough darts or whatever else there is available. I haven't really gotten too far into making cool shit yet.
The log suit plus a spear was more than sufficient to kill multiple hounds, multiple spiders or even the big tree thing (because it attacks so slowly), but I got my ass whooped with trying to stick and move against the Deerclops.
If my calculations are correct, it would take three hundred quadrontillion darts to take down Deerclops.

god damn pengulls stop setting up camps next to my base
I swear they added those just to add extra tilt during winter. Pengulls suck. The game was better without them.
They were cute for like 0.25 seconds... then just damn loud and annoying. It's enough to make me regret every time I run too close to the ocean during winter.
Eventually, the world becomes covered in rot and other stuff that is too easy to create by mistake, too plentiful to use, and no way to delete it. Pengulls suck because because not only are they loud and obnoxious, but also they add more trash to the world.
It's not like eggs, feathers and morsels are hard to get (even in winter). Drumsticks are harder to get, but not really worth the time.
Pengulls are dumb. Anyone who likes the Pengulls is probably a masochist.

some people have legit awesome bases
I take it as a message on our landfill culture. That's why my base runs on trash. It's totally green that way. I could put the trash into a landfill where it's going to stay for millions of years, or I could burn it up, get a nice smokey smell and let that smoke go into the sky where it turns into stars.
With a new game today, I got a pretty good farming setup going for twigs and grass and was able to really stock up before the first winter which means I'm not running out of materials for traps like I was in my previous game that lasted more than 10 days.
Right now I'm mostly just waiting on a Deerclops so I can see if I can fuck it up or not. I have several healing salves ready to go, so I guess we'll see what happens if he shows up.
What the hell is a tree guardian?
They start showing up more and more in the later game. Basically, they spawn when you chop too many trees. They morph out of one of the trees nearby and start chasing you. You can "calm" them by planting 5 or 6 pine cones in front of them. Thus, they hang around and will draw aggro from monsters like hounds or deerclops. My deerclops attack ended with the two of them duking it out. I ran away and came back to drops from a dead tree guardian (live logs) and no sign of deerclops.
There are 3 sizes of them. They have different attack points, hit points, and speed. Big ones hit harder, are tougher, and walk faster than smaller ones.
Yeah, you can tank the small ones, but really, you should practice basic kiting on them. There's no easier mob in the game to kit, so I'd make it a point to try to take down single tree guards w/o taking damage. When you're facing 2 or more of them, it gets much harder. You need to separate them somehow if you're going to fight them.
*KIT (pronounced, and commonly spelled "kite"): an acronym for Kill In Transit. A fighting style whereby you draw and dodge an attack, then counter-attack. Repeat. Variations include luring an enemy into trap.
*mob: a shortening of MOBile enemy. contrast to a "static" or immobile enemy (a la tentacles).
Note that all enemies are commonly called mobs these days.
I'm deathly afraid to start playing this again. I was doing so well and after a month vacation I will be rusty and probably die.
I just got this for PS4, it's currently the free game if you have PS+. I'm trying to not read too much about this, but this is a lot of fun.
Yeah, there's a bit of rust every time I pick it up again, but it cleans off nicely. Since they usually have gone through 2 - 4 updates since I last played, there's plenty of wtf moments.
I find it gets me excited to pick something I haven't done before and make it my game quest. First one was making every possible hat. Second was exploring the caves. Third was Maxwell's Door (!@#$ that place)... I guess I need a new one.
Nope, Maxwell's Door is completely free in that regard. You will retain all of your items and the overworld is like you never left it.
Unless they've changed something in an update recently, the time is returned to the moment you left, and your stats are returned, too.
As far as I can tell, going into Maxwell's Door has absolutely no effect on the overworld.
If you were running from a hound attack when you go through the Door, then the hounds will be there attacking you when you get out.

Make a map with maximum creatures and it's a lot like Australia.
rofl this made me cackle dunno why
Reign of Giants early beta available. Seems to be a complete overhaul of the game. I'm downloading it now.
Squee! Who's playing with me?
http://forums.kleientertainment.com/...g-summer-2014/
Ooooohhh... it's freeee!
Agnes has been dying at Reign of Giants... in a fun way, of course... Unlocking new characters I haven't tried yet.
Def. worth looking into... seems they've completely overhauled the crafting recipes and everything I used to know about surviving is getting more and more outdated.
It will be great if my old laptop can handle it as a multi-player game.
I'll only join if you have a cool team name, though. Names are important.

Ima axe bikes in the back
This game is amazing value. Still updating and altering a year later.
Currently got Willow on day 80ish in a non ROG world with the surface fully explored. Now debating whether to go exploring the caves which I never bothered with when they were released or keep trying adventure mode to unlock Maxwell and Wes.
Reign of Giants is tough. Tried a few times so far with Wilson but rain is just killing me early on. I struggle to get the gear to stay dry while doing the usual setting up of food and weapons. All part of the fun though!
If you like puzzles then check this out. How they revealed the multiplayer stuff.

def try the caves. Caves have a deeper level, the Ruins... so if you've only explored the overworld, then you've missed out on a lot of gameplay... and great artwork... and gear... and trolly mobs.
Do eeeet.
EDIT: 80 days is excellent. Have you gotten to the point of using the pitchfork to make roads where you want them yet?
Also: Screenshot of your base or gtfo.
I need to find some time to get back into this game.
Yeah I def need to get down to the ruins, got some neat loot from the caves recently while being chased by monster glow worms. I guess the fact I've lasted a very long time on this world makes me reluctant to take risks, but really there's no point just playing it safe all the time. Caves are super far away from my base without any wormholes nearby, might make a cave base!
My base is simple compared to most. I've got a fire pit with lots of traps a screen away to deal with hounds at night, otherwise I just run them to the beefalo for free meats. I get loads of frogs legs before winter and make jerky + froggie brunwich to survive. Pigs to chop loads of wood right before winter and I'm sorted.

Still need to make a shadow manipulator but I don't have a good source of nightmare fuel, flowers are slow and make you go kray. Idk if there's an easier way to get it?
Willow is pretty easy to play, permanent torch + sanity regen by fires means no sanity lost at night which is great.
ROG is SOOOOO much harder! I haven't even made it through two seasons yet. I was doing well with Widfrid until Deerclops came in the middle of the night and ruined everything. I had a touchstone, but the stupid Pengalls killed me when I was in the middle of killing a spider house that was located too close to the coast.
Starting in spring is tough, but is doable if you can find everything right away. Summer is what's hard because the heat hurts more than the cold of winter.
When is this going multiplayer?
Just got back into this and played Reign of Giants. Really fun still. Exited to see what multiplayer brings. That's currently in a closed beta.
Co-op or Versus?
Co-op might get me back into the game if I can find any friends.
Didn't get into the closed beta.
